A couple of times on the History channel about 5:30 am or so they broadcast a fifties style clip about the building of “Century City” (I think that is the name of it). It was built in the Arctic basically by digging huge trenches then covering the tops up with metal. What intrigues me most is the “portable” nuclear plant they installed for electrical power. I’ve already googled a bit and came up with nothing. Does anyone know what happened to this little city?, is it still there? did they remove all traces of it; including the nuclear power plant? I guess I’d like to find out a little more history about it
It’s called Camp Century, and it indeed was a Cold War-era military base below the ice and snow in Greenland. It had its own nuclear reactor, the PM-2A, the world’s first portable fission plant.
It’s now used by the NOAA Paleoclimatology Program, taking core samples from the ice to determine the climate at various points in the distant past.
Well, Crap! no wonder I couldn’t find anything about it. I’ll look up CAMP CENTURY.
