In all of the establishing shots we can clearly see that The Planet Express Building in Futurama is situated near water. It looks to me to be the East River, but can’t even be sure whether it’s in Manhattan or Queens (I suppose it could even be on Roosevelt Island).
Anyone have any closer guesses? Are there any points where we get a more specific establishing shot?
It’s also possible that the local geography has changed in the last thousand years; it might be some new body of water, probably named after a 20th century politician or rapper.
Word. As we saw a few times throughout the series, everything from Old New York is underground. Remarkable how the supports down there can not only hold up a pretty substantial city, but large bodies of water as well. Now that’s 30th century engineering!
lol that was a great scene. We see the house that looks like it has had a long 1,000 years, then go back in time to see it looked that bad to begin with.
It was probably a river or lake carved out by the lasers of the fleets of flying saucers that demolished Earth civilization a couple of times during that thousand years.
Mildly interesting factoid about NNY geography: In the first episode, a man stepping into the transport tube gives his destination as “JFK junior Airport”, which was worth a mild chuckle until the real JFK junior died in a plane crash. Subsequent broadcasts have the destination changed to “Radio City Mutant Hall”.
