Are Acer Laptops any good?

After being told that they actually make laptops for a few of the bigger names, I have been looking at Acer laptops, specifically this one:

Does anyone have any experiences with Acer laptops? Are they any better or worse than a similarly priced Dell or HP?

I’ve owned two Acer laptops and an Acer desktop as well. I was pleased with all three of them.

The display on my first Acer laptop failed after nearly a year. I called the company and they arranged for UPS to pick it up the next day, supplying a special shipping carton specifically made for notebook computers. Acer quickly replaced the viewing screen and I had the unit back and as good as new at no charge in about five days.

I was so pleased with their customer service that I purchased a second Acer laptop which turned out to be my all-time favorite computer. Unfortunately I accidentally spilled a bit of water on the keyboard and killed it. When I called the company they told me that replacing the keyboard would probably fix the problem but they’d rather not handle that repair themselves. I was puzzled at their attitude and asked if they would replace the keyboard if I returned the unit to them. They said they would do that but the charge would be $500. They encouraged me to order a replacement keyboard from them instead and either install it myself or get someone local to do it for me. That’s what I opted to do. They charged $34 for the replacement keyboard which was fine with me. I almost choked when they charged $52 shipping on that part, though. (A local technician did the work for me for $36, so even with the inflated shipping charge the repair cost me much less then the $500 Acer wanted for the job.)

After that experience I decided I didn’t want to deal with them again and purchased a Dell laptop. It’s been a real pain in multiple ways though so I’m pondering going back to Acer in spite of the keyboard replacement problem. I consider my three Acer computers to be the best I’ve ever owned.

YMMV, of course.

We owned an Acer laptop a couple of years ago. I don’t remember the details, just that I would not buy another one. Cheap components and poor design, I think, were my biggest complaints.

I’ve heard the same opinion about pretty much every laptop maker but IBM. Could anyone be more specific?
