A doctor friend of mine once said: “Assume that anything that smells like almonds is poison. Including almonds.” He wasn’t a fan.
In some parts of the world, you can still get “bitter” almonds, which do have a surprisingly low toxic dose, but the everyday ones you get in the US are pretty much harmless (I don’t know if they don’t have cyanide at all or if the dose is just too low to matter.)
