Favorite snack nut?

Probably been done before, but whatever.

What is your favorite nut to snack on?

Peanuts in the shell. I prefer either the raw ones or roasted in the shell without salt.

Cashew or Pistachio.

I picked pistachio, but I like everything on the list except macadamia nuts.

I voted cashews (gesundheit) but I love 'em all! I love to wipe out a can of mixed nuts, so that would have been my real vote.

A can of mixed nuts, two liters of Canada Dry Ginger Ale, and a belch you can measure on the Richter scale!

Absolutely macadamias.

Before last November I would have picked just Almond and Cashew, but now I also add Walnut – because two months ago I cleaned, dried, and shelled (not easy – monkey wrench!) a bunch of black walnuts from a neighbor’s tree, and they were extraordinarily flavorful. Think perfumy bananas.

I would vote for all of them, but I’ll pick my top three: cashew, walnut, pistachio.

If I just had to choose one, Cashews would probably have to win. I also love smoked Almonds, but the one with the fondest memories are in the shell roasted Virginia Peanuts on vacation in Williamsburg sitting on the deck of the condo with the kids and tossing the shells into the bushes. I still from time to time order a box of them when I know the kids will be home and we have a great time sitting on the deck at home chatting and tossing the shells wherever.

Brazils are my favorite. Peanuts and almonds are great, too. I’d include walnuts in the shell – they’re not so good if already shelled.

Ditto.

Like them all. Used to love salted peanuts (not dry roasted), but they tend not to agree with me now. Cashews become cloying after a handful. I try to stick to walnuts and almonds now, as the health benefits are proven.

Filberts. Filberts, I say!! You can keep your lousy hazelnuts!

I voted for all except pecan. Under “other” I’d include coconut and roasted soyabeans.

Sign me up for almonds and pistachios.

The others are ok (except Brazils, no thanks) but these are the ones I keep in my desk at work.

In particular for almonds, I go for the oven roasted & salted from Aldi in the light blue bag. No added oils, just almonds & salt. One gripe is that the salting is inconsistent among batches and sometimes too light. I eat about an ounce each day during the work week and so go through the 12 oz bags regularly. You can see through the bag to see if they are a little less salt dusty. When they are, I only grab one bag instead of my usual three or four. They’re still good, just not worth stocking up.

I will also gripe about the pricing increase although I doubt this is due to Aldi strategy and is in fact because of market forces. I’ve been buying these for about three years now and have seen the 12 oz bags rise from $3.99 to $5.49 which is a pretty substantial hike.

The Aldi 1 lb bags of roasted salted pistachios is $6.99 which isn’t bad.

Heh, I like everything but pistachios, and macadamia nuts are by far my favorite. But I don’t eat them very often, because they cost too much. They’re better than cashews or pecans, but not four times better.

I thought this looked familiar. For a 3-year old comparison, check out

The pecan is the finest of all nuts. Raw, roasted, roasted and mixed with pistachios, cahews and raisins, or put in a pie.

Walnuts are seasonal. and I buy them in Nov and Dec. I voted almonds. I get the raw ones. No salt or additives.

Pistachios are good too. I don’t buy them regularly because they are salted.

If I have to pick one, I’m going for cashews.

I was all ready to post a link to the Best In Show nut scene, but I see that’s been taken care of.
