A Thread That’s Just Nuts(and eating them too)

Walnuts, Brazil Nuts, Pecans, Almonds, Hazelnuts! Yes, it’s the season for NUTS! Do you like them? Do you love them? What’s your favorite? How do you prepare and eat them?

I myself have been on what turns out to be, I’ve discovered after a barely qualifying google look-up of research, on what probably is an unhealthy mixed nut eating binge the last few weeks.

One curious question leads to more questions of course, so here we are. Tell me about your nut eating habits.

I love almost all kinds of nuts; particularly almonds and macadamias and pecans and walnuts, and they’re all even better when they’re hot roasted and seasoned/sugared.

I consume more of the Diamond brand of almonds, and love their various flavors. Pecan pie is a delight. And they’re all just fine lightly (or not so lightly) salted too.

I also enjoy walnut syrup, and make my own. But that’s produced from the walnut tree sap, not the nut so I guess it doesn’t count.

I eat a mixture of almonds, walnuts, craisins, and cereal every day for breakfast (no milk).
Then when I get home from work, a couple handfuls of peanuts to tide me over until dinner.
Any nuts I don’t like? Nah.

I love plain ol’goobers. You know Prez. Carter’s livelihood.
I have to limit myself.

I have pecan trees. The nuts are not the best. They’re ok for baking. Out of hand they leave a bit to be desired.
The squirrels disagree. There’s always wildlife wars when the nuts start falling.
The squirrels also leave the sharp shells on my deck, for barefeet. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you.

For the past few months, Aldi has had sales on both cashews and pistachios. Which, coincidentally, happen to be my two favorites. Usually I keep a jar of peanuts around for snacking (while not my favorites, they’re still good, and cheaper than other nuts), but right now it’s all about the pistachios and cashews.

We have black walnut trees on our property. The squirrels are welcome to them.

I love peanuts. My favorite tree nuts are cashews, hazelnuts and almonds. Pecans are great for some baked goods, but I don’t care to just eat those out of hand.

We haven’t been able to get bags of unshelled hazelnuts or almonds for 5-6 years now, so I was very happy to find a few bags of unshelled almonds at the store a couple days ago.

Even shelled whole hazelnuts have become hard to find. The last time I saw those was at a truck stop in Greece and I bought a box of them to take home.

Me too. Although, I am not a big fan of macadamia nuts. Most people I know love them but I’m kind of meh about them. I’ll eat them but there are so many other nuts I’d rather have (e.g. pistachio and cashew).

IIRC macadamia nuts have an interesting history. Apparently they are very difficult to shell and it took a long time for someone to invent a mechanized system that could do the work.

But yeah, to the OP, I love nuts. When growing up, around this time of year, my mom would put out plates of mixed nuts still with their shells and a nutcracker and pick to get at the good stuff. I loved it.

And, my pantry always has peanut butter in it.

My family is nuts.

I love brazil nuts and black walnuts (naturally the ones I love the most would be the ones that are hardest to get into if you get the unshelled variety), and hazelnuts, pecans, cashews, almonds, macadamias. I don’t dislike english (aka “regular”) walnuts, I like pistachios quite a bit, peanuts are great. Hmm, yeah I coulda just said I like 'em all…

My grandparents did that too. Me, I have a pair of channel lock pliers and a fork. I shopped for a set of nut eating tools, and holy crap they were expensive.

Pecans and almonds. Mostly because with other nuts (peanuts, cashews, and pistachios) I want them salted. Pecans and almonds I eat plain with pleasure. Although I have on occasion made a homemade rum and brown sugar glaze for baked pecans or vanilla-cinnamon-sugar crust for almonds.

Both of which get eaten faster which is probably not a good thing.

You can get these for $8. Nothing fancy but they do the job. Probably overpriced for what they are but $8 is not terrible.

I’m allergic to all kinds of tree nuts, and peanuts, and have been all my life. I’ve accidentally eaten walnuts (as being apparently the most common to sneak into some food unexpectedly, like instead of pine nuts in pesto) a few times – as a child I went into anaphylaxis and fainted, as an adult I just feel really bad (and itchy) for a while and I treat it with a strong antihistamine. Some are worse than others, hazelnuts and walnuts are among the worst, almonds among the most mild, but (not surprisingly) I avoid them all.

I buy from https://www.hazelnuthill.com/

Trader Joe’s sells bags of cashews that are coated in lime and chili, and I’m a little bit addicted to those. Otherwise, I like unshelled pistachios because they are tasty and it’s pleasant to work your way through them.

I must only eat shelled pistachios now.

I once ate far too many unshelled pistachios and got sick (not disease sick…just ate too much sick). That pretty much never happens to me but it did that one time. It put me off pistachios for a couple years (like if you get sick from drinking some type of alcohol you can’t drink it anymore).

I got past it and love pistachios again but I must eat the shelled kind because it slows me down and limits how much I will eat in a sitting.

Wait, can’t you eat them faster if they’re already shelled?

Yup. And that’s why I got sick once from eating them. I could grab a handful at a time and chow down.

With the shells on I can only eat one nut at a time and it takes time to remove the shell. So, I eat less of them in a given timespan.

In my world, shelled nuts means no longer in their shells.

I see…my mistake. I just meant to say a nut still in its shell.

To me, nuts without their shells are un-shelled.
