Are babies really born without kneecaps?

I’ve heard it from a whole lot of people (uneducated, non-doctor types) that babies are born without kneecaps. I asked a pediatrician and she said that, yes, they are born with kneecaps and that the kneecaps are just undefined. I’m at my brother-in-law’s house and he swears that he also asked several pediatricians and they all said that babies do not have kneecaps.

So which is it?

First hit from the Google search “babies kneecap born”

Uh. Guess I was checking the wrong site. I don’t know what I was thinking, checking WebMD for, umm, medical information. Thanks.

And guess what? The people with whom I’ve engaged in this argument are still saying, “See?! So they don’t have kneecaps!”

If female neonates are born with all the eggs(not quite fully developed ) the ovaries will ever need-let’s see one/month for 40 or so years, plus a lot more, it’s no big deal to throw in knee caps too.
