Kids jeans with reinforced knees

Do kids jeans still typically come with reinforced knees? When I was a young lad my mom dressed me in those godawful Sears Toughskins jeans, which had an extra layer of denim ironed onto the inside of the pant legs at the knees.

While I understood the purpose of the reinforcement in theory (indeed, my jeans never got holes in the kneecap area), even as a kid I thought they were silly because I always ended up with holes right along the edge of the reinforced area. The outer layer of denim would always separate in a nice straight line along the top or bottom edge of the reinforcing patch.

Lee reinforced knee kids jeans.

IKKS jeans.

Toddler bibs. A 6-month-old infant needs double knees? Whatever.

ETA: I haven’t shopped for kids’ jeans for a while, but AFAIK they don’t “typically” come with reinforced knees; I hadda hunt around on Google a bit to find these. They’re out there if you want them, but otherwise I think it’s just regular jeans mostly.

Typically 6 month olds arn’t toddlers. They crawl. Having said that, my daughter ruined the ends of shoes more then pants while she was crawling.

Oh please I had holes in my knees, my son AND daughter had holes in their knees. There shoes held togethet because we lived in Texas and outside of school and church they didn’t wear them

LOL

I think it’s marketing

Another curious thing about reinforced knees: aren’t most kids going to grow out of their pants long before they can wear a hole in them?

No! Well, little little kids might not, but my son usually punches through a new pair within 2 weeks. The playground at recess seems to be a big contributor. It can be exasperating, but I just patch 'em.

Well, jeans can last a couple of years if you buy them big to start (and cinch 'em in with a belt) and turn ‘em into cut-offs when they get too short at the ankle. Depending on the activity level and carelessness of your kid, yeah, a favorite, oft’ worn pair can get holes.

One grandmother bought my son a couple of pair of the reinforced knee jeans, and he hated wearing them because they were stiff right where he most wanted flexibility. They didn’t get holes sitting in his dresser drawer, that’s for sure! :stuck_out_tongue:

As a kid, the lane I lived on (off the Old Galveston Road) was covered with oyster shells. Occasionally a new load was dropped–& they were really sharp! (I still have the calluses.)

My dorky orthopedic shoes were reserved for school, church & shopping trips.

(And I remember ironing those patches onto my little brother’s jeans.)

I have yet to see any reinforced knees on any of my kid’s clothing. But she’s only two.

My mom used to wonder why my jeans always had holes in the knees, until one day when she picked me up from preschool. I ran from across the room to meet her, and dropped to my knees and slid the remaining 10 feet to her feet. She never wondered again.

Ah, Toughskins.

Coated in plastic, weren’t they?

I actually remember owning pairs of kids’ Levi’s that had reinforced knees, at the age of six or seven, which means around 1964-65.

Yes, I believe they were. God I hated those things. All the other kids in junior high had Brittanias and San Francisco Riding Gear, and Nikes or Adidas. I had Toughskins and Winners.

My sons’ Osh Kosh and (I think) Lee jeans are reinforced, but their Levi’s and Calvin Klein’s aren’t. And only from about size 3T on up. The baby’s sweatpants have a little extra padding at the knees, for crawling, I suppose, but that seems to stop at the 18 months size.
