You can bitch about cigerette butts all you like, But frankly you should be more concerned with the Hummers, Motor oil, Litter, suage contamination of the water and other such issues. Or how about you just save a tree? True, Cancer fags do get quite messy in large amounts, but there are more important things to worry about.
Meh. i feel like such a tree hugger.
milroyj, where do you keep your cigarettes? Your pocket, purse, briefcase, desk drawer? Put the fire out on the bottom of your shoe and stick the butt back where you carry the unsmoked ones. This shouldn’t bother you. They aren’t any more disgusting than the new ones, just shorter.
Just curious, why is this in great debates? Sounds like another smoker rant to me (about time too, we haven’t had one in about a month or so  )
Just seems as if it would be more fitting in the Pit, so the rabid, foaming at the mouth anti-smokers can really lay into the evil, horrible, unhuman smokers more appropriately.
It does appear that many socially unacceptable things are okay provided they are done because of smoking. Littering, smelling bad, etc.
If you don’t smoke, I won’t fart.
Cigarette smokers are not pigs per se.
Cigarette smokers who throw their butts out the window or on the ground are littering just like anyone else who disposes non-biodegradable waste inappropriately
Thus speaks the man who got a €50 fine for dropping a butt out of his car window, and then realised the error of his ways.
Why shouldn’t they litter? Why would someone not care about how their clothes, breath, car, and body smell, not care about their health, not care about making people inhale second hand smoke, not care about throwing money away, but care about litter?
We bitch about those things too, just that there is a time and place for everything, and this is the time and place for bitching about cigarette smoking pigs.
Actually it was supposed to be a debate about smokers being pigs or not, but…
For Christ’s sake, can this thread get closed or moved or something? I smoke. Evidently I’m Saddam’s evil step-nephew. Sorry for being such a terrible person. Feel free to flame (heh. flame) away at me and all the other smokers in this non-debatable great debate.
And zwaldd, your description of those stinky smokers has left me speechless. Just what, exactly, are you trying to prove with your ridiculous comments?

This happens every time there’s a smoking thread. Smokers are the one group of people that it’s still okay to bash. Hell, it’s even trendy to bash smokers.
The really ironic thing is that it’s usually the X smokers that are the worst. It’s like they have to constantly remind themselves about how evil smoking is by bashing smokers at every chance they get so they don’t fall of the wagon or something.
You should see the smoking threads in the Pit. Some of the worst self-rightous anti-smokers act as if smokers are on the same level of “evil” as murderers or rapists. Last time I checked, smoking was still legal.
It doesn’t matter how much of a considerate smoker you are. It doesn’t matter if you smoke a pack a day or a cig a day, in some of these people’s eyes, you are the devil.
And of course, smokers are also the one group that it’s okay to make gross generalizations about. Because smokers aren’t allowed to defend themselves, you see, because smokers are evil.
There are not enough rolleye smilies in the world.
That not caring about litter is consistent with not caring about health, odor, etc.
milroyj, why not start carrying around an old Altoids tin or something? I put my food wrappers in my pocket if there’s no trashcan available–so can you!
This may be the first time I’ve seen anyone decry ad hominem attacks AND make an ad hominem attack in THE SAME SENTENCE.
Pardon me while I wipe the foam off my mouth. Okay, that’s better…
This happens every time there’s a smoking thread. Some smokers just don’t get it.
(My emphasis) Non-generalization noted and appreciated. Please return the favor.
This thread is about smokers who litter. Either they are by far the majority or there is a significant minority that smokes waaaaaay more than the rest and drops its garbage everywhere. Do you deny that butts are a very prevalent, if not the most prevalent, form of litter around? I carry my garbage with me until I can dispose of it properly. Why do you consider that you are being “bashed” if you are asked to do the same? If you already do it, then you are not one of the smokers being called a pig. Do point that out, by all means. It cheers the heart. Don’t play the martyr if all you want to do is excuse or defend slovenly, inconsiderate habits.
Well, that I agree with.
Don’t get what? That we’re horrible people? I don’t recall any smokers bragging about littering. Most of the time smokers are trying to defend themselves from the non-stop attacks by anti-smokers.
Just like you said not all smokers are pigs, I said that some anti-smokers are self-rightous, holier-than-thou jerks who feel as if it’s okay to judge the kind of person someone is by a habit they have, not by, well, the kid of person they are.
I’m a smoker and I can’t stand smokers that litter. But according to zwalld, that can’t possibly be true, because I smoke. And because I smoke I automatically don’t care about hygeine, the environment or my health.
Go back and read zwalld’s post. Then ask me why I consider that I’m being bashed when I’m asked to do the same. I already do the same. But in zwalld’s eyes, that doesn’t make a lick of difference. Because I smoke, see? And because I smoke that automatically means that I don’t care about my health, the environment, hygeine, ect. ect. ect.

Aaaaah.
First post after the OP.
Actually, I’m pleased to see that most of the smokers on this thread are coming in with “I don’t litter” posts. It’s what I’d expect from the overall intelligence and rationality quotient of this board. I don’t think smokers are horrible people. I do think they have a horrible habit and I suffer from the fallout of it, as do others. That’s the part I think smokers don’t usually get. Many often don’t seem to realize just how offensive that fallout is to non-smokers. They think non-smokers are getting all bent out of shape over a minor thing purely for the purpose of oppressing others.
And vice-versa. Vicious cycle, ain’t it? Will you feel bashed if I say that the “attack” I feel I get from smokers involves the actual physical assault of having to breathe their unnecessary fumes? I know you enjoy the stuff, but it feels like being whapped upside the head (figuratively) to me. Now I’ve gone beyond the thread subject, as this is about littering. That’s not a physical assualt, simply a selfish dirty thing to do, no matter what you’re dropping on the ground.
Thank you for acknowledging that not all anti-smokers are like that. Your first post was about “rabid, foaming at the mouth anti-smokers” who wanted to “lay into the evil, horrible, unhuman smokers.” I thought that was a rather broad brush considering the general tone of the responses.
I’m glad to hear you don’t litter. You’re a non-piggish, considerate smoker and a fine human being with a deep concern for the environment, I’m sure. That sounds sarcastic and it isn’t meant to be. I like your posts on this board and I think you’re cool. (And I agree with you about the Nicole Kidman thing.)
I’ll accept that zwalld also painted with too broad a brush and is wrong that you and every other smoker on the face of the earth don’t care (though clearly the ones who are littering don’t care). But I’d agree smokers are being cavalier with their health, and the health of any who may live with them, especially kids. And no matter how fastidious your hygiene, if you (generic you) smoke regularly, you and your environs don’t smell good to a non-smoker. I guess that’s okay as long as you care. And don’t throw your butts on the ground.
In a previous life with the Park Service, we used to have a field day with smokers who flicked their butts, either while driving in the park, or just walking about.
After stopping them and informing them of their inappropriate action, we would begin writing two tickets, one for littering and the other for improper disposal of a burning object. Of course, most would be apologetic and attempt to get out of the tickets. Being the obliging type, we walked back to the point of infraction and suggested they pick up their butt (or for that matter, all the butts in a ten-foot circle because they could not identify their own). Any complaints at this point was an automatic two tickets.
For some who considered fighting it in Court, as is their right, we did point out the local federal magistrate really did not like being bothered with these issues and often imposed the maximum penalty - up to a $5,000 fine/six months in jail for each infraction under 36 CFR.
Very few we gave tickets fought them in court. The standard $50-$75 fine was sufficient.
**Major Kong, SparrowHawk, and genie, ** that’s what I already do. Put the thing out and stash the butt, usually in my pocket, until I get to a trash can. Some other smokers, however, aren’t nearly as polite.
Just saying, it would seem to be beneficial to everyone if there were more ashtrays, not less. Take a large indoor shopping mall for example. No smoking indoors, fine. But some people are going to either smoke in the parking lot during the hike in, or are going to step out of the mall for a smoke break. If there’s no ashtray reasonably near the entrance, some people are going to toss their butts on the ground.
So having more ashtrays, and designated smoking areas, for that matter, would benefit both smokers (a place to smoke and dispose of it) and everybody else (less litter).
Awww, SparrowHawk, why do you have to be so nice and cordial? You’re killing my rightious anger here.
I was kinda hoping he was being sarcastic. If he’s not then yeah, he’s an idiot.
That’s something I always get offended at, because i’m so careful when I smoke. If i’m in public I make sure there’s no one in my immediate area who’s not also smoking. If I sit on a bench and there’s someone else on it, I’ll wait until I see them light up before I do, so they won’t have to inhale my smoke. I don’t even smoke in my car unless I’m on the freeway, so I’m sure my smoke won’t drift into other people’s cars. And I never flick butts out the window. After my graduation, I wanted a smoke so bad. But my aunt decided she would ride with me for the hour long drive to my graduation party. She doesn’t smoke. Hates it. So I didn’t smoke until I got to the party (and I went outside, where no one was), even though I really wanted one. I didn’t make her wait before we left so I could have a smoke either, because I didn’t think she should have to stand there for 10 minutes while I got my fix. After constantly going out of my way like that, I can’t help but get resentful when people automatically assume I have no respect for non-smokers, or their lungs, or that I force them to enhale my smoke.
See my above comment.
I was actually referring to the general nature of the smoking threads on this board, but I can see where you’d get the impression I was generalizing. In essence, I was. Sorry 'bout that.
Okay, now you’re making me blush. ;j
Actually, this may be suprising, but most people don’t even know I smoke. I’m a light smoker (bout 3 or 4 cigs a day) always pop a breath mint or gum after a smoke, wash my hands and a lot of the time, use body spray. I’ve shocked many a people when I tell them I’m a smoker.
I didn’t say every smoker doesn’t care about littering. I said not caring about the things I listed are consistent with not caring about littering.
