I am interested in drinking more wine, but find that most varieties I prefer (mostly Shiraz) are often overpriced. I understand that, in Australia, “cleanskin” wines - premium wines that have been over-produced, but are then sold at discount without the winery label - are quite a deal. For example, you could get a dozen bottles of Shiraz for $6 a bottle or so. Is there any similar offers in the US? (I live in a state that does allow wine delivery by mail.)
Huh. Never heard of such a thing. (My wife is a professional winemaker.) AFAIK, that sort of overproduced wine usually gets sold before bottling at commodity prices to larger producers who need bulk wine. Then it ends up in box wine, etc.
Also, in the states, there are so many restrictions on selling alcohol, that I would be somewhat surprised if you could have “generic” wine. Even when I bought custom-labeled wine from my wife’s winery, they were required by law to list on the label the name of the winery, etc. (Of course, they’ve since turned custom labeling into a cash cow, so they now slap a huge promotional sticker with their name on the back of the battle for PR purposes.)
Ah. I’ve had some success locating low-cost wines that are OK but I was hoping to find a similar deal (buying bottles in quantity at low prices). Labels mean little to me.
