Midwesterner. Cite? Or link – I ain’t fussy. But I seem to have missed some of the contextual kerfuffle. Will someone guide me to some of the undue criticism in its native matrix so’s I can make up my own mind? 3 or 4 people with their feelings hurt isn’t evidence, or even a crowd.
Opinions aren’t evidence in any case, and that’s what the OP is asking for. You also might want to wait just a wee bit longer than a half hour or so before deciding that a thread consists of “3 or 4 people with their feelings hurt.” While you’re at it, got any evidence for those alleged hurt feelings?

But, the Dope isn’t much different from everywhere else in that regard. When most people want to talk in a mocking “dumb” voice, they do it with a Southern accent.

Unduly critical? No. I can’t think of a time where someone was flamed for being Southern or “Southern” was hurled as an insult. People here make fun of Southerners, but they also say negative things about Californians and New Yorkers. I can think of a couple specific threads where people said some very unflattering things about the South, but it’s far from a board-wide phenomenon.
I recall instances outside the current Pit thread where “Yankee” was used as an insult by a Southerner. It probably came from the same person every time, and if so it’s not surprising coming from that poster, but on the whole my impression is the animosity flies more from the South than it does to the South.

Second, after the last exchange, I’m already rethinking my gut impulse.
Not really Southern. Not even American. Yes, to an extent.
Those threads aren’t about the South. They’re about the Confederate flag. I don’t like the flag, but I like fried food. Do those cancel out?
