Alright so I’m in the pub with my brother the other day, and he’s all “so, I totally Nair, everywhere, I don’t have a hair on my body these days, and my girlfriend too” and I’m all “woah, that’s madness” and he’s all “no man, everyone’s doing it, I know lots of people who do it” and I’m all “really?”. He even wants me to do a piece about hair removal for the goofy local arts rag I write for.
Are people really balding it up that much out there? Am I totally stuck in the 70’s?:dubious:
I only shave my face. I don’t know anyone who uses Nair all over. Either you aren’t stuck in the 70’s or we’re stuck there together (though I’ve never been in the 70’s).
Well you can buy Nair For Men, so I guess some people must use it. Personally I’ve heard a lot in the media about male hair removal, but I don’t know if it’s just the sort of shallow self-absorbed people who crop up on every other vacuous TV program, lifestyle magazine article, etc.
I’ve tried that Nair for men stuff (just like normal nair but smells like … cucumbers?). It doesn’t work for me. My hair is near impervious, and my skin isn’t. So to have it take off the hair, I get a chemical burn.
Guess I’ll just stick with the razor, and that not quite everywhere.
I guess I must be stuck in the 70s too then, because if a chappie of mine asked to borrow hair-removal cream I don’t think I’d stop laughing for a week. Really, that must take a lot of Nair. Can you buy it in industrial sized tubs from Costco?
I really hate body hair also. Up through high school, I would never wear short sleeves because I hated the hair on my arms but I never shaved it off or anything since that would look odd. However, I finally realized it wasn’t that bad. But, when I started cycling back in High School, I began shaving my legs (not for speed or anything, but because I had a nasty bike spill once and the wound on the side of my leg got infected a bit. The Dr. recommended I shave to lower the risk of a similar incident happening again [I assume hair increased the risk of infection?])
Well, when I moved to SF, a city that does not have the most bike friendly terrain, I still shaved because it looked much “cleaner” compared to having the hair grow back. I have noticed an increasing number of depilatory products that either are inclusive of, or specifically advertised to, males. Even though I have minimal chest hair, I do plan to have it permanently removed, again just for personal aesthetic reasons, along with most of the hair below the waist (except for my privates, of course).
I think if that ridiculous macho notion that shaving is a determinant of sexual orientation, perhaps even more guys would?
I’m curious about the hair removal products you see on TV that dissolve hair. Is there some major downside to them? It seems like everyone would be using them; I’d much rather do that than shave every day.
Re. the OP: I shave my face every day, but have never naired anything and have no plans to. I’m not a very hairy dude though (no hair at all on my chest), so I’m not really a representative sample.
If you leave them on too long, they’ll soon begin dissolving the skin (not literally, so I’m sure there is a better word).
With men, who generally have coarser hair and more hair in general, leaving these products on up the point were it starts to burn, it’s still not long enough to remove much of the hair, even if you spread the stuff real thick.
And most of these products, due to their inherent harshness, are not recommended for use on the face or, like angelabaca now knows, anywhere near the perianal(?) area.

**One time I shaved my balls with a razor blade. I had to go real slow as to not cut them off by mistake.
This brings up an important question. Gillette, with its superior technology, has conquered the curves of a man’s face; how much longer until they challenge the next frontier: the curves of a man’s balls?
Well, I’m in high school, and a significant number of my guy friends do, in fact I’d say more than half. Most of those were on the wrestling or cross country team, though, so that might have something to do with. I personally hate any body hair, so the Nairing is perfectly fine with me. However, I should also point out that I have a few very hairy guy friends that don’t do anything about their (visible while clothed) body hair. No one says anything badly about those that Nair or those that don’t, as far as I know.
I was thinking about this very thing today as I finished off my weekly shaving of (parts of) my chest hair and ahem other parts.
I have lost a lot of weight the last 3 months and put on a fair amount of muscle and was wondering about removing everything on my chest to accentuate the muscles and nipple rings. Granted, it is not a lot of hair - just a dead mouse in the center and some around the nipples. The idea of Nair chemical burns keeps me from doing it!

Okay, I think I get why the cross country team does it (less wind resistance?), but why does the wrestling team nair? Do they pull each others’ chest hair otherwise?
