I received this dollar bill today that was misprinted. The seal on the left side that indicates what city the bill was printed is down almost completely below the serial number. The bill is a US 1 dollar note, series 1999. I did a search on google and couldn’t find any useful info. Anyone have any idea how I can find out the value of this bill, if any.
Since I’m not a collector, I can’t actually answer your question, but I might be able to help you find an answer. When googling, use the term “Error note” as that is what they are called.
Years ago, I had a collector’s guide for U.S. currency, giving approximate values for bills, including bills with various errors. Yes, most non-trivial errors do add value. The value ranged from a few dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on the severity of the error.
Here are the recent auctions of error notes on ebay. Some are worth more than others, and most received no bids, probably because they were overpriced by the seller. On collectable items, you really can’t underprice auctions on eBay; the collectors will seek them out and bid the price up to the market value, so long as you use the correct terminology (“error note”), and put it in the correct category (Coins:Paper Money: US:Errors ). Put it up for a dollar; if it has any value, it will go up.
