It’s about the time of year that I’ve been planning this year’s garden. I’ve been thinking about having a few hanging strawberry baskets. However, it seems they usually don’t have strawberry seeds in the usual sets of seed packets next to the seeds for tomatoes, cucumbers, and so forth. I have seen a few more involved strawberry growing kits that include strawberry seeds and a lot of other items. But usually it seems the strawberries are grown from whole plants and not seeds. Is there any particular reason strawberry seeds are hard to find? Are strawberries grown from seed not as good as ones split off of existing plants?
I grew strawberries for many years, but never from seeds. I used the bare root kind shown here, on the 2nd page. I’ve never seen any grown from seed.
Delicious. Birds and cutworms will fight you for them.

You probably don’t see many strawberry seeds because the runners are just so much more convenient. Strawberries are grown from seed, and give good fruit, but even commercial growers seem to stick to runners. Strawberries are a picky plant in the first place, and adding the uncertainties of germination and early diseases just increases the odds against a good crop.
