Are "Infinity" Swimming Pools Illegal In The USA?

I love the look of “Infinity” swimming pools-the illusion of no edge looks neat. All Ive seen have been in the Caribbean, and S. America-not in the USA.
Are they illegal here? Maybe OSHA feels they are dangerous?

What makes you think they are illegal? Rarity?

We had one when we lived in Florida two years ago, and my sister still has one (she’s in Florida as well).

I’ve seen them in FL as well.

They’re expensive to make/maintain, and the effect is lost indoors, which limits their use to expensive resorts where its warm enough to make use of an outdoor pool most of the year. In the States, that’s pretty much FL and Hawaii.

They’re everywhere in LA - don’t you watch the “Home Porn” channel?

Here are some from all over the world including USA. Some awesome views.

I’m pretty sure that OSHA would, at any rate, only be able to keep them out of the workplace.

It stands of Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Yeah, my daughter had some ritzy kids at her preschool and my wife and I once went to a birthday party in Bel Air at a house with an infinity pool. It was the first time we’d ever seen one.

Only in warm climates? They seem to be the “in” thing for rooftop condo amenities here in Toronto.

And here’s an aerial view of the house we were at:

Naturally occuring infinity pool (NSF the squeamish).

What were you doing hanging out in that slum?

If you notice, a lot of the featured infinity pools are in emerging economies. Infinity pools are a relatively new trend, and so you’ll find them more often in places that have lots of new luxury swimming pools. In the US, however, a larger percentage of the luxury hotels and the like are older.

it says it’s safe - anyone know how? interesting pic

There is a hole almost at the edge of the cliff where the water flows.
This video shows people standing on the cliff side wall of the pool.

So … what makes infinity pools look the way they do? Looking at the edges of them kind of freaks me out.

Incidentally, I had no idea the Maldives were so beautiful.

Apparently, people only die there occasionally, so I guess it’s safe.

Basically, it’s a double edge. A traditional pool has an edge higher than the water to keep the water in. An infinity pool has the water going right up to/over one edge, then there’s a second edge below and just outside to catch the water and recirculate it into the pool. So it’s a little like a man-made waterfall where water is continually caught and pumped back around.

The picture here (from a previous poster) shows that second edge clearly visible on the left side of the picture: http://www.lovethesepics.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Outdoor-living-incredible-infinity-pool.jpg

“mostly” safe, I guess:( I wouldn’t swim there!

Holy shitballs. Not safe!!
