Are names without alphanumeric characters allowed?

Just now I opened a thread on Segway tours and quickly found that the SDMB has a new poster. Said poster’s name consists of four dots or periods. See here.

I’m not sure it’s actually against the rules, but I thought I’d ask: Should the SDMB allow people to have usernames that do not contain any alphanumeric characters?

Why the #$%@ not?

If not, said poster could change to The Poster Formerly Known As . . . .

I don’t think any non-alphanumeric characters should be allowed. SnowboarderBo and BiffytheElephantShrew should be required to fix their usernames.

ETA: Actually, their names are too long also. A maximum of eight characters should be plenty. Snowboar and Biffythe would be much better.

“Rhymes with blythe, don’t you know.”

Why not?

Because.

Kinda tricky to search for, I would imagine. For some reason, I can’t test this theory.

They could use Morse code to secretly spell out forbidden words.

The Search button is located at the top b… DAMN YOU FEYNMANN!

I want to change my user name to ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

(Assuming that Rachellelogram doesn’t already have dibs on it, of course.)

I’m changing my handle to :city_sunrise: :rainbow: :bridge_at_night: :ocean: :volcano: :milky_way:.

I just want to change it to characters that look like keyboard characters but actually aren’t (non-breaking spaces, em dashes etc.), so when people try to search for me, they can’t find anything.

If you are going to do this, you might want to change your username to A Figment of My Imagination while you are at it.

I want to change mine to ASCII 07

My name will be
\r^H^HNUL.

Can I change mine to “Robert’); DROP TABLE Students;–”?

I actually have thought about changing my name to Little Bobby Tables, but that sort of ruins the fun of it.

My name is … but you can call me .

As I posted in another thread…

…we can use non-ASCII Unicode characters like ū in our usernames now? Cool! 'Cause I’m totally going to change my username to something like “Þór 菜. McЖеня”.
