Are Parents Making a Deal Out of Their Daughters' First Periods These Days?

I don’t know. Just not me. (If I was anyone’s parent).

On a serious note, isn’t this what we have sex ed classes for?

Anyone with accurate, nonemotional facts – A book, a sex educator, a planned parenthood nurse, just for a few examples – which parents rarely supply, whether through ignorance or just because their own life experiences have little relevance to their children’s. For example, I came of age sexually during the AIDS epidemic and few if any parents were accurately informed about it. Parents who themselves came of age during free love 60s and the fuckfest that was the 70s, really did not have any useful advice for those of us in the “sex will probably kill you/semen is as dangerous as plutonium” generation. My parents were well educated generally and very open to discussing sexual matters, they simply lacked the necessary knowledge.
