The scenario is usually something to the effvect of : They are interveiwing a girl, asking her all the basic questions and then basically they get her naked and have a go at her for a “test” run to see if she’s qualified to be in the perspective porn movie.
It’s easy to infer from these scenes that the actors are not getting paid for these “test” runs.
Everyone in broadcast porn, be it DVD or online, is told ahead of time what’s going to happen, and then gets paid. And usually very well paid, which is why they’re willing to do what is sometimes quite… harrowing.
The criteria by which they’re hired include neither acting ability nor conversational brilliance, by and large (though there are exceptions).
I can give two bits of anecdotal data, only one of which I can vouch for the reliability of, and both involving the gay-porn subgenre.
In the 1980s Barb and I befriended a family in our old home town, a fairly large family which had fallen on hard times when the father became disabled (and the mother was chronically ill, after having had close to a dozen children). The three youngest, all teenage boys, were all comfortably bisexual, about Kinsey 2, much preferring girls but quite willing to get their sexual pleasure by whatever means were available, which included a surprisingly large number of men with a taste for sex with adolescent boys. The youngest of them was quite bright and strikingly good looking, and was dating (and sleeping with) a girl with relatives in Chino CA. We worked with the relatives to get the young couple to CA where they could have a chance for a better life. Several months later they returned, separately, having broken up, and he came to visit, telling me about having done some porn photo shoots to make some money. He said the porn producers’ instructions were to not try for any serious acting but simply play out a scene that transitioned as rapidly as possible from a ‘real world’ scenario to hot-n-heavy sex. He’s now in his 40s, with kids of his own, and a few of his ‘stills’ are still out there on the Interporn.
A member of another MB had a career somewhat similar to our Markxxx’s, with the same willingness to dish dirt about people he’d encountered. He mentioned two current porn stars – he had partied with someone using the stage name of ‘Roxy Red’, whom he said had lousy judgment and was emotionally needy but fun to party with, and who had little or no (intellectual) depth, but who could convincingly portray enjoying gay sex, apparently because he was. The other was a boy (late teens) named Trent (surname was given but I don’t recall it) who used the stage name Jessie Starr, and who was, in his words, “dumb as a box of rocks.” I can’t vouch for the veracity of this, but there seemed no obvious reason for him to be inventing those sorts of negatives about guys most people had never heard of.
And even if it happens within the casting call for (another) actual “produced” porn video or for a porn photoshoot, the parties have a pretty darn good idea of what is going to happen well before it gets to this. For the deed to be done and recorded for sale or distribution there has to be a signed release on record to make it legal to do so; the players are paid, save if one or more of the players are specifically appearing as amateurs.
As with many other unskilled-labor occupations, there is a wide variation in intelligence, but it’s definitely not essential for the majority of basic entry level positions (sorry!!!)
Or if those straightbait scenes where the guy who’s picked up “off the street” and told he’s making a straight porn gets blindfolded so they can bring in a gay guy who starts to fellate him and then he takes the blindfold off and “HEY!” are real.
Exactly. All porn is fantasy for the audience. If the audience believes that girls can be picked up off the street and tricked into having sex on camera, then there’s a market for that fantasy. This is true even if it’s a willing suspension of disbelief, as in fantasy and science fiction.
You mean that the girl the pick up in the bus, have sex with, and then ditch without paying her is in on it? And that so many random coeds don’t just happen to look like famous pornstars? Thanks for shattering my dreams.
Yes, the “casting couch” videos are staged in the sense that the “job applicant” knows what’s going to happen, has already signed a release and had their age verified, and is being paid something. However porn studios do use these videos as auditions for other videos with more varied “plots”. Porn is one of only two industries where it’s perfectly legal to insist prospective employees have sex as part of their interview (the other being Nevada brothels).
