Do all languages have puns? I am looking for “to the ear” puns, or word pairs that are indistinguishable when hearing them.
There is one in Portuguese, where Olga, the wife, tells her husband to get a glass of water in the kitchen, but it sounds like she tells him to go get screwed, in the butt to be specific.
Ask a Brazilian.
I was kind of pleased with myself when I made a pun in Korean regarding the nearly useless fingerprint scanner the US military in Korea uses for base access. In Korean, the suffix /gi/ can mean /machine/. So, one day, I was trying to get a visitor’s pass for a friend. The lousy machine wasn’t working worth a hoot. After about five minutes of try, try, try again, I finally asked the Korean guard, “What do you call this thing in Korean?” and pointed to the machine. He told me the Korean word. Then I said, “Nope. It’s called ssuregi.” For the uninitiated, ssuregi means trash. The guards cracked up, so I’m guessing puns in Korean aren’t unknown.
