Are silicone cases bad for your cell phones?

There seems to be this widespread notion among some phone equipment sellers that silicone cases are harmful for cell phones in that they will cause humidity to infiltrate the inner workings of the device.

I googled all I could and could not find a single reputed reference to this occurrence. Is it all a myth?

WAG. If they have any tendency to hold water, they are going to discourage them… especially if they don’t sell them in their retail stores. If it leads to any extra replacements, or broken phones, they are going to have to either reject coverage claims due to moisture, or fight with the customer… neither of which are events they enjoy.

I’ve never had any of my phones “wet”. The closest it’s come to wet would be walking to my car in the rain, or the condensation from moving from cold outside, to warm, humid, insides. I once had a long argument with the guy at the service window about whether or not a mobile phone was able to handle the difference in temperatures, or if I should just leave my *mobile *phone in a nice climate controlled environment, or if I could actually use it when I was mobile, and outdoors, then return to a warm place. The “moisture sticker” says no, and it’s the “did it get wet, yes/no” indicator that they love to check.

If you create a seal around the seam of your phone, you keep the moisture out as well as in.

This is normally fine unless there is a temperature change in the places your phone is usually kept. (If the saturation point in the enclosed atmosphere of your phone drops, moisture will occur.)

But we keep our phones with us most of the time and we like a pretty stable temperature.

To avoid moisture build up, maybe put the phone in the fridge for a while before attaching any case that would seal the phone.
