BrainGlutton, ads rotate, so you can post a link to the page you encountered it but it won’t help. Someone else will likely see a different ad.

This is really annoying. I used to be able to surf the Dope in peace while having my speakers on in case I have to switch over to YouTube. Now, I am going to have to keep turning my speakers off every time I come here.

Is this supposed to happen? It’s only been happening to me very lately (like over the past couple of days).

ETA: it’s usually the pizza advertisement.

I just got one for AT&T digital life? Ends with “Rethink Possible”.
Then it turns into some fat black lady doing stand-up ‘comedy’, with her talking while the sound of the previous commercial plays over it at the same time.
Then it turned into another ad with kids on a porch, with the AT&T commercial playing over that!
Now it just turned into the fat chick again, and the AT&T played AGAIN!
Now it’s just the fat chick.
No, I didn’t click it, didn’t drag it, didn’t select it at all!
…now the AT&T is back…
loud annoying music for the end of her standup bit…
just the AT&T soundtrack…
now a silent ad for the Lone Ranger movie, gonna let it run thru.
Fat ice house chick again, at least now it’s silent.
A Lysol ad, thankfully silent.

And now it’s stopped.

So, that’s AT&T, Lysol, and comedytime.tv whose products I will never, ever use, thanks to this single advertisement. Good work, Ad Men!
I’ll probably see Lone Ranger, but I was gonna see that anyway. I just won’t pay for it, now.

How desperate is The Chicago Reader anyway? I mean, seriously. I’ve seen ads for things I’d never want associated with this website… what’s next? Bigger Penis ads?

This same exact complaint was brought up not long ago.

On column archive rerun from 27 May 2013 (“Is the south side always the baddest part of town?”), the inset advertisement above the “Recent Additions” list was an autoplaying, fully-animated, with-loud-sound advertisment for “Schiff Megared” on my recent viewing of the page.

Completely autoplaying. My mouse pointer never came anywhere near it. No clicks, no mouse-overs, nothing at all until the voiceover started blaring (which was immediately upon page load).

I don’t have a good way to post a screen cap, alas, but I hope this is enough information to squash this obnoxious nuisance.

Keep in mind that even if something was said at one time, that was at least two owners ago and the current owners may do as they wish.

These things just slip through occasionally, and the recent change in ownership has given you a convenient excuse to ignore the reports.

I do hope the new owners are happy with the brilliant strategy of cranking up the obnoxiousness of the ads until everyone is convinced to use ad-blockers. I’ve literally never even come close to installing one for any other site, but here I am, blocking ads on your site. Smooth move!

It is reality.

This is a business, one that is not owned by the staff nor the users. The owners of this site can place whatever content they want on these pages.

It’s worrisome and annoying when an ad sounds off at an unwelcome time and in an unwelcome place – especially in your office. But there is nothing that we can do about it. It’s why I keep headphones hooked up to my computer all the time – I have people on different sleep schedules in my house that object to noise. I don’t always hear everything but I’m not unpleasantly surprised neither.

I’m sorry if it sounds off in your office or if it wakes the baby. I’d do something about if I could. I don’t know what else to tell you.

You still can. Either pay for an account to remove ads, or use adblockplus.
