I’m not sure if this is the right place, but I’m just curious. Every stereotype seems to have at least some aspect of truth in it, so I’m curious, are Irish people really that violently aggressive as everyone thinks they are?
I was listening to the Black 47s the other day, and in one song, in response to a simple “You look like a fag with that pony tail and earing” insult, the subject of the song busts a guy’s face open with a two by four. You hear Irish comedians joke about it, you hear Irish singers sing about it, and you see a lot of crap in movies and television flashing it out there. I know none of these can be taken as honest examples of how members of a society act, but like I said, most stereotypes have some resemblance to the truth, so I’m just curious. Does every little row have to end in a beating, or are the people of Ireland just as civil as the rest of us (okay, maybe that’s not saying much, but you get what I mean).
Mind yer tongue laddie. We of emerald blood only fight when we are drinking and now that it is 9 A.M., I’m gonna have a few pulls from the flask and knock some good manners into yer head. After I’m done, I’m gonna bring my mother-in-law, who is Jewish, in the room and within 5 minutes she’ll have you feeling so guilty for bleeding on your own rug that you will be sobbing hysterically, apologizing for making me beat you, and begging for another beating as penance.
I won’t enjoy it either because you’ll be making me fit the stereotype
Just so you don’t think me a total ignorant fuck, my mother was child number 12 in an Irish Catholic family with an abusive alcoholic father, so like I said, there’s oft times SOME truth to stereotypes. I’m just curious how truthful this one is. Obviously, not very (thankfully), but if I do offend, please, allow me to by you all a pint when I come to visit (out of curiosity, how many dopers actually live in Ireland?).
The biggest problem with being part Irish and Scottish is that I like to drink but hate to pay for it.
I believe it’s the Swede in me that tempers the other two.
Does anyone here remember watching “Bizarre” with the Bigot family? Every one of them came from a different ethnic background and each member of the family was everything that was stereotypical about their nationality. It was all too funny and kinda sad at the same time.
Well, if sporting events are any indication, the Irish teams and supporters conduct themselves very well at the world cups. I think they are well liked around the world.
