Are the Tyranids running from something?

Warhammer 40K players/fans: I’ve heard rumors, recently, that the Tyranids have either eaten everything in their home galaxy and moved on to ours as fresh meat or are running from something else. Which is it? What would scare them? How do the other characters know? Has anyone ever contacted the hive mind and brought back information, as a result? Which of the books goes over this?

I haven’t seen anything suggesting the second theory is true. Even if an author did suggest it somewhere, I’d be inclined to disregard it, given that psionic communication within light-years of a hive fleet is difficult. Deliberately contacting the hive-mind itself seems like a short trip to insanity.
