Are there any Amsterdamers out there?

I’m going to Amsterdam wif me bruver and a few friends at the start of September to hopefully see the might of the Rep. of Ireland football team overcome the piddling Dutch (in my dreams)
Can you give me any help in the do’s and don’ts of amsterdam life
Please, if you’ve even been to amsterdam and would like to share your wisdom with me please do - I know nuffink

Hi

"Don’t"s in Amsterdam? Not that I know of

It’s a party town. The Dutch and the Irish always seem to get along great - especially if the guys in orange win, so the guys in green get to pay for the Guinness!

Any more specific questions? I’d be delighted to help you out!

blokey, if you go out for a pint of bitters with Coldfire, RUN at the first sight of a straw.

Don’t live there but have spent some time there-- I’m sure Coldfire will set me straight.
If you hooligans have much free time before or after watching the Dutch whip your team, at this time of the summer be sure to stroll around Rembrandtplein and the Leidseplein-- very happening spots (from the tourist standpoint) in the evenings. I’d get a hotel out a ways-- the ones in the very center are icky, but once you get out to Prinsengracht or so things are quieter at night, if you feel like sleeping. Heineken has an unfortunate stranglehold on the beer market, but you’ll see beer from a local smaller brewery- Het Ij, and their beer is very nice.
Generally it’s an interesting city for tourists because there is the decadent wild side of things and the cultural side of things, and a devotee of either can enjoy the city even if they totally ignore the other half (I’m getting to an age where I enjoy a trip to the Rembrandthuis and Westerkerk more than a trip to Coffeehouse Kandinsky and the Sex Museum).

I recommend visiting the Torture Museum, even if I’ve never seen it myself. Don’t ask Coldfire where it is though, he doesn’t know, which makes me suspect he’s not really Dutch. He’s probably from some chickenshit embarrasing little country like, France.

Ouch…even Coldfire couldn’t drink an entire pint of bitters!

I’ll be there for 4/5 days from the thursday to the monday and the match will take up only 90 mins of this time.
I’m already booked in and staying in the Bulldog - is this a good idea? - i’ve read mixed things about the place
The problem is i’ve got 4 days to kill and want recommendations on how to do this (remembering the weekend would be a bonus)

You’re staying at the Bulldog?? Hee hee
Folks, the Bulldog is, besides a cheap-ass hotel, also the biggest and best stocked Coffee Shop in A’dam. And that’s quite a feat!

UncleBeer, don’t make me call you a Canuck

Shock !!! Horror !!!
Unbeknownest to me I have checked into the best ‘Coffee Shop’ in amsterdam. That was never my intention

hamster what?

Bulldog? Ok, so you don’t want to sleep much, ok. . . (he walks in, shocked. “Oh my God, you’re all SMOKING DRUGS!”). The place is like The Gap of weed. I’ve never stayed overnight there (technically), but it seems like the kind of place where you need to have some pocket change to use the showers and you might want to take some earplugs-- just a guess. The square it’s located on is pretty busy.

I’d skip the Anne Frank House because you will spend 3 of your 4 days in line outside. I know there is at least one of the Sex Museums on Damrak, unless I am horribly mistaken. I hear the Zoo is good. Swallow your pride and take a canal cruise-- you see some things you can’t from street level. The museums are good-- the van Gogh is very crowded and annoying for that reason-- Rijksmuseum is less crowded. There are some good fleamarkets on various days.

I wouldn’t worry too much about a developed itinerary-- it’s just a good town to stroll around aimlessly in. Entertainment will find you.
