Are there any black catchers in MLB?

Anybody know of any? Historically, have there been many/any? Can’t recall one…

Charles Johnson is currently playing for the Colorado Rockies

Roy Campanella is probably the most famous African-American catcher, he’s in the Hall of Fame. He was replaced in the Dodgers lineup by another African-American, John Roseboro.

By black, do you just mean African-American? Or do you not wish to count Sandy Alomar?

Marcus Jensen has played in the majors and is in AAA now.

One of the most famous black catchers, and one of the first, was Elston Howard, the first black player on the NY Yankees (1956-1967). He was the first black AL MVP and the first black World Series MVP. His number has been retired by the Yankees.

Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows Charles Johnson, a black catcher…
If you wish to count catchers who appear to be black but may not, don’t forget Tony Eusebio

Johnny Roseboro was catcher for Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax on the LA Dodgers in early 60’s, but he will be forever remembered as the target of SF Giant’s pitcher Juan Marichal’s bat, who hit him over the head in August 1965.

Say, has anyone mentioned Charles Johnson or John Roseboro?

Quincy Trouppe was the first African-American catcher for an American League team.

I know he didn’t exactly play for Major League Baseball but Josh Gibson, who played in the Negro Leagues, is considered by many to be the best catcher who ever played the game.

Earl Battey
Choo Choo Coleman
Fleet Walker (who played back in 1884)

Another was Lenny Webster, who caught in the majors from 1989 to 2000.
