Thanks for the link UrbanChic. That is rather outrageou$, but at least it is still made. Now I’ll start searching. Another yummy one I’d forgotten about is Scotch Broth.
I agree with Motorgirl, for the most part.
My favorites:
Bean with Bacon
Chicken Noodle (though Lipton’s is good too)
Beef Noodle
Vegetable (a favorite alphabet soup)
Vegetable Beef
Minestrone
Chunky Sirloin Burger
Tomato (in a mug, or as a cooking ingredient)
Cream of Mushroom (cooking only)
I tried Pepper Pot. I’ve also tried menudo. You’re welcome to it.
My Dad once gave me some consomme when I was sick–he even called it “sick soup.”
Clam Chowder (Manhattan style and New England style–though it’s harder and harder to find the Manhattan style any more)
Aha! You have solved a mystery for me. I make chicken spaghetti with the cream of mushroom soup and lately it hasn’t tasted right at all. Now I realize it is the soup that’s ruining it! sigh Maybe I’ll try an off-brand soup next time.
Not counting using them as ingredients in a casserole, I only eat two Campbell’s soups. The tomato with milk is a must when eating grilled cheese. And when I have a cold, I crave Chicken Noodle with no water added. Something about the uber saltiness of it and the mushy noodles is soothing.
I only like the clam chowder by itself. I use cream of mushroom in a lot of different recipes though.
I was pretty stunned when I moved to NYC and all the Campbell’s soup changed. The consistency, colour, and taste are very different in New York from what you get in Montreal, Vancouver, and Seattle…
It is so easy to make good soup! Just use instant onion or chicken soup mix as the base-then chop up some vegetables (add a clove of crushed garlic) and a tablespoon of good olive oil. Then simmer till the veggies are tender-if you want some starch, add some rice or broken pieces of pasta.
You can make an excellent soup this way, and avoid all the junk that Campbells adds!
Ooooohhh…I really must avoid these threads until I’m not-pregnant.
Now I really, really, really, want Bean With Bacon soup, made with milk instead of water. Damn cravings.
Like want it enough to drive to the store, fighting Saturday morning crowds.
Damn.
Is it me or do Campbell’s soups smell like dog food.
That probably depends on what kind of soup you’re talking about.
I stopped eating Chef Boyardee Ravioli when I opened a can once and my cats went nuts over the smell. Soon, I realized the cats were going apeshit because the Rav smelled exactly like canned cat food. Then I realized the ingredient list for ravioli vs. cat food was probably not all that dissimilar.
I’ve gotten really picky in my old age and generally prefer to make things at home from scratch now, because that way, I know what’s in my food.
I’m quite picky in regards to homemade versus store-bought food. I always bake cakes and brownies from scratch, can’t abide the taste of canned frosting (let alone that nasty supermarket bakery cake-topping abomination), wouldn’t think of buying boxed chicken nuggets or canned spaghetti products. But convenience foods are . . . well, convenient, and they have a place in my kitchen. I don’t bake my own sandwich bread, can my own preserves, grind my own peanut butter, or whip up special homemade mayo or ketchup. I spice up jarred pasta sauce and always have Progresso seasoned bread crumbs on hand. You get the picture.
I love to make soup and can crank out a mean corn chowder or minestrone if I am so inclined. I also love to open a can of Campbell’s chicken and rice, tomato, vegetable beef–add water (milk in the tomato), stir, heat and enjoy. Yes, it is comforting but also yummy.
A long football Sunday calls for a homemade tortellini soup or perhaps a pot of slow-simmered chili. A quick Saturday lunch before heading out for the craft fair includes a bowl of Chunky Chicken and Dumplings.
IMO, canned soups, of which Campbell’s is king, have their place.
Pepper Pot Soup fans, take heart. I thought that online price for Campbell’s Pepper Pot Soup was awfully high. Do a search via Amazon and you can buy it there much cheaper – 1.55 per can.
I miss Cream of Vegetable. Mom used to make maid-rites with it, stir it (no diluting) into cooked, crumbled hamburger meat, put it on a bun. Nowadays everyone does it using Chicken Gumbo – sounds weird, but it makes a good sandwich.
Who said Scotch Broth? That was good too.
Hubby likes Beef Barley.
I like Tostitos corn chips in my Tomato soup.
Bean and Bacon too – mom used to make bean soup from scratch and I wondered why it was so bland. Then she started adding carrots and tomato sauce or ketchup like Campbell’s does, and it’s pretty darn close to Campbell’s. Or Campbell’s is pretty close to homemade when it’s done right. One or the other.
Our local store still has Pepper Pot. Send me an e-mail if you’d like me to send some off to you.
I can’t seem to find Chicken and Dumplings anymore.
Actually, that offer is good for anyone who’s jonesin’ for Pepper Pot.
Ooo, I love canned asparagus. I’m going to give this a try!
