Are there any cheap or free, no ISP req'd email services?

You know, that just might work! My yahoo account can have several users and while they assume we are all in the same house/state/country I have no problems logging in from my basement phone while my daughter is online upstairs (different phone line). An Audrey and she’s got it made!

You are a sneaky one, Mr Kid!

OTOH, she’s got money. Let her get her own d*mned system.

Thanks, fezpp. There’s one free ISP by her but they have STMP servers blocked because of spam. But she’s across Puget Sound from Seattle so there must be more hippies with free ISPs!

Does that free ISP block users to use ANY SMTP servers?
If that’s the case, maybe you can set up a Hotmail account for her?
I know Hotmail is not very good but she can see if she likes e-mail or not.
Or look for a kind neighbour with wireless LAN.
Maybe he can let her leech his connection.

dropzone I have been a Hotpop user since a long time and to my dismay I have found out that they do not allow you to send or recieve mails over 500kb.

You can of course configure your outlook express to automatically split messages larger than 500kb and send/recieve it as 2 messages, but it always doesnt work the way it is supposed to.

As ihsus suggested GMX let me tell you my experience with them as well. The last time I tried to get an account there (translating everything in German and all) the problem was that they required you to send them some kind of identification via snail mail if you wanted to keep that account, failing which they would cancel the account within a week.

I have finally found a great SMTP/POP mail provider in Gawab. Its a middle eastern site I think but you can open an account using good old english. They have no size limits, absolutely no spam and since its relatively unkown you can get the email address of your choice.

Just in case if you dont want to go through all the hassles of searching for a new POP/SMTP proivder you can configure your Outlook Express to send and recieve your messages from your hotmail account. Its pretty simple and fast.

Juno is perfect for that.
It’s what my mom uses free.

They have a separate tab for email without web, and if I’m not mistaken it doesn’t count against your 10 hours per month.
You just have to warn her to click “Continue” or “Close” on the 3-4 pop-up ads that come along. If she clicks an ad it closes email and goes into web mode.

I’m blushing–I drew Brainiac out of lurk mode for his/her third post in nearly FIVE YEARS!
