Are there any good WWI flight sims?

The title says it all, are there any good sims out there for WWI era fighters (PC platform)?

Red Baron 2 is the last one I’ve heard about, but it’s pretty good IIRC. Pretty old too, I suppose…

I dunno about modern platforms…but I loved an old Windows 95 (I think…maybe older than that) game called Red Baron. You could fly for either side, from the beginning of the war all the way through the bitter end. Dogfight, air defense, ground attack, and Zeppelin missions. Ace Challenges. All the most famous aircraft. I miss that game…

Thanks all, it’s too bad they don’t seem to be making any sims these days for WWI. While we are reminsicing, does anyone remember the Ace of Aces gamebooks from the early 80s? Those rocked.

Seems like there was another WWI fighter sim that may have been called Ace of Aces. It was somewhat similar to Red Baron, except it had a way to play against live players…and took a lot less damage to score a kill…like only a couple of hits.

Think I saw the books you mentioned, too…maybe messed with them a little bit, but it was a long time ago and my memory is really vague…

Hijacking my own thread but here is a link to the Aces of aces game:http://maverick.brainiac.com/aoa/aoa1.html

Additional ones from Wikipedia: First Eagles, Flying Corps, Dawn Patrol, Knights of the Sky, Wings.

I should point out:

Note that most of those are old (except the 2006 “First Eagles”) and I have no idea if they’re any good.

Edit: Gamerankings.com has a much more comprehensive list along with reviews.

There is an online PvP Flight Sim, Dawn of Aces, that was quite fun that I played for a few years, but it grew stale from lack of developer support or expansions. There is apparantly a newer version, but I haven’t played it.

I tried a demo of eith “Dawn Patrol” or “Flying Corps”, it wasn’t bad. They were made by Rowan, who also made a very good sim called “Operation Overlord”, so perhaps the quality shone through on the other game too.

I’ve no idea though if their games would run on a newer PC, a later game by the company, “MiG Alley”, wouldn’t run on my WinXP machine.

I was just coming in to suggest Warbirds III—which, it seems, is by the same company that makes Dawn of Aces (qv), and in fact, seems to be an older edition in the same franchise.

The version I’ve played, anyway, had a good number of WWI aircraft available for missions (well, the single-player versions of multiplayer levels, anyway. A nice variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground stuff, but not very story driven), and weaponry, including Le Prieur anti-zeppelin rockets (no zeppelins to attack, IIRC, unfortunately).

Hah! Zeppelins!

Sorry. They’re just so… fluffy. And deadly at the same time. My type of weapon.
