I’ve seen discography’s on Wikipedia for various artists.
For example here is Emmylou Harris
I’ve wondered how they get such exact listings of Albums? I see one source they use is allmusic.com. They even get the chart positions for the albums and singles.
I’m trying to put together a discography for Herman Clebanoff. He recorded under Clebanoff Strings and Clebanoff & His Orchestra. Primarily on Mercury records.
Is there an online database for Mercury Records listing their pressings? Or for that matter, other major labels like Columbia Records, RCA etc.
I checked allmusic for Clebanoff. He’s got multiple entries. Usually only one record under an entry. I haven’t found a complete discography for him. For some reason, Clebanoff never got released on CD. I’m in the process of ripping my vinyl collection of Clebanoff.
I hadn’t heard of Discogs. I see they got some good info. I found some entrys on Clebanoff. A few release dates. But, not complete.
I was hoping the record labels had an online database. I’m sure the people running Mercury or RCA Records know exactly what they pressed, any reissues, and the release dates. But, whether they’ve shared that info is another matter.
It’s not really online. And Allmusic is not very good for older records – they list the labels of CD releases instead of vinyl. For instance, all the Bonzo Dog Band albums are listes as being from One Way Records, which did US CD rereleases; the original records were on Liberty Records, except for “Let’s Make Up and Be Friends,” which was United Artists (these are the US record labels; the British ones were different). Wikipedia is a better source.
