I’ve been on a Big Star craze lately, and want MORE!!!
I have their three albums, and Chris Bell’s album.
I think I actually like Chris Bell’s album more than the Big Star ones, too. I haven’t heard anything good about solo Alex Chilton.
BTW, thank you SDMB, because it was through you that I found out about this great band.
You could try The Replacements, who were arguably Big Star’s biggest fans, and the solo work of their front man, Paul Westerberg. Their LP Pleased To Meet Me even has a song called “Alex Chilton”.
Alex Chilton’s High Priest is pretty damn good, particularly “Got a Thing for You” – great double-entendre song – and “No Sex.”
It’s the only Chilton I own, aside from the three Big Star discs. Maybe I should get some of his live stuff…I caught one of his shows at the Knitting Factory back in the late '80s, and he was a pissah.
about solo Alex Chilton?
You’ve never heard anything good about solo Alex Chilton?
I could understand hearing solo Alex Chilton and deciding that you don’t like it- a chacun son goute and what have you. But as far as what is said about him- I’ve never heard anything bad about solo Alex Chilton.
Now, I don’t have any specific albums to recommend- I don’t really know any of them. But I’ve seen him play Live three or four times and he’s always been incredible. Definitely check him out if you get the chance.
I see a few people have mentioned the Replacements. If you’re interested in bands that were strongly influenced by Big Star, then you must check out the much overlooked dB’s.
Also, I don’t know if you’re familiar with it, but the Bangles did a good cover of Big Star’s September Gurls. And, as fate would have it, later down the road Vicki Peterson of the Bangles ended up in a band with Peter Holsapple of the dB’s called The Continental Drifters- also very Big Star influenced.
Ah! Okay, I get the point!
His albums haven’t really gotten any good reviews. I don’t have the time or money to check out albums with bad reviews unless I hear otherwise.
I don’t have many chances to go to concerts because I don’t like going alone and would have to find someone to go with me.
I’ve heard a few Box Tops songs, and liked them. I’ve bookmarked this thread so I can check out some of the other bands mentioned.
Huge huge huge Big Star fan reporting in: I have a live CD, can’t remember the name and out of town right now. It has an interview with the band - actually just Alex Chilton doing the talking - smack dab in the middle of the CD. It was recorded at a college campus.
It is pretty good and worth owning. The songs are done pretty faithfully to the recordings - which is pretty incredible since they are just a three piece rockin’ out. There is one song not found on the first two CDs - it is a cover and I can’t remember. Oh, wait - here it is. The cover is “Motel Blues” by Louden Wainwright.
All in all worth owning, but I don’t listen to it as much as my #1 Record/Radio City CD…
I need to listen to Third/Sister Lovers and I am the Cosmos more - I haven’t burned them into my brain yet…
