I guess the question is self-explanaotrory. Are there any other MB’s which have the same kind of forum categories and quality of conversation? SAnything even close?

I’ve seen other boards, and am maybe a member of half-a-dozen or so, but there is nothing with the breadth and depth of this place.

I think that there are some closed boards that can be pretty good. My wife is a member of a board of women who all gave birth in the same month of the same year. They have grown into a very close knit, but diverse group, with a lot of varied discussions.
i suspect, though, that since no one can get in, it will eventually atrophy and die without new blood.

I regularly participate in a number of other more specialized boards. But when it comes to an answer to a question, or something to just make me laugh, or pictures of KITTIES!, or a great rant that skewers something so perfectly, there’s just no place like Dope.

I think Portal of Evil has this forum beat on that front, frankly. In fact the whole ‘posting pictures of kitties’ thing is by no means a Straight Dope phenomenon, having taken root in many other forums, too.
I like this board a-plenty, but I also like PoE and apolyton.net. Frankly, I’d rate PoE over this board when looking for a good laugh, and apolyton.net has (for me) the advantage that I’m a rather more integral part of the forum community there.
While more focused on media-related topics, Fametracker has a very well-educated and funny poster pool (is that the right phrase?) and they love a good grammar nitpick almost as much as 'Dopers do.
My dad posts to a board that sounds pretty similar to the SDMB. It originated on a now-defunct service for legal professionals, and when the service went down, the posters made a new board. They’re all lawyers, so I imagine it’s more legal-y, but he’s told me about discussions they had about completely random, non-legal stuff. Much smaller population, though. But they meet in person occasionally, too.
Salon used to have a very funny user forum, but they went over to a pay model and it more or less died out. Don’t know if it died out or not.

The boards over at Snopes are pretty decent. In fact, that’s where I learned about the Straight Dope and Cecil.
I’m quite desperate for a parenting board that’s Dopesque. Heck, I’d settle for one with decent spelling and no lecturing about how parents who get their kids flu shots are murderers. Given the number of rants in the Pit about crappy parenting boards, though, I don’t think I’m likely to find one in the near future.

I’ve registered there; don’t plan to post ever, but I read the civ3 strategy and such on at least a weekly basis. I’m nowhere near good enough for their group games, though. I still have a ways to go in balancing my gameplay.
