What other message boards do people visit? I’m sure there’s a lot of Farkers and SAers on here, but does anyone go to/post on any interesting boards you’d feel happy reccomending?
What are your interests?
All the other MBs I participate in are interest based – www.chronicleforums.com for horse-related talk and www.crochetville.org for crocheting. IMHO, there is no other “general” MB of any quality other than this one.
Kiss ass.
Just general interest boards, really, like this one.
The only others I’m on are a couple of gaming boards, one of which is home to a conspiracy nut that makes Dale Gribble sound reasonable.
I lurk on the arstechnica (http://www.avsforum.com) and bad astronomy (http://www.avsforum.com) forums
I also use the AVS forum for home theatre type advice (http://www.avsforum.com)
I used the kayak building forum (http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi) before / during my kayak project. Now I mostly lurk.

But… I thought we were so happy together. Why do you want to start seeing other boards?
Well, a Brit such as yourself might be interested in the urban75 message boards, based in England, and run out of Brixton in South London.
The breakdown of forum topics is a bit different to the SDMB, but a lot of similar issues get discussed. The community is smaller, and there tend not to be as many new threads as we get here.
For the most part, the politics of urban75 are further left than those of the SDMB. This is partly because what qualifies as liberal or left in the US is often rather mainstream in western Europe and the UK. But it’s also because there are quite a few avowed socialists and even some anachists on urban75. There are very few conservatives, even fewer than here. But this doesn’t mean that it’s all happy agreement; leftists and liberals are notorious for internecine arguments, and urban75 is no exception. There are often really interesting and heated debates, on everything from film to Marxist theory.
It’s not moderated as heavily as the SDMB is. For example, there’s no ban on discussing things like P2P software, and there’s actually a Drugs forum. Also, there’s no Pit, and insults can be launched in any forum. But this doesn’t mean it’s out of control. There are moderators, and they do a pretty good job of keeping things under control.
Ii don’t spend as much time there as i do here, but i do like it, and check it out on a regular basis. If you decide to give it a go, keep an eye out for me; i post under the same name.
Technically, LiveJournal comms aren’t message boards, but I spend a lot of time on them and many have active moderators. I’ve found LJ comms are such a huge source of info they can rival the SDMB.
Skip’s Magic Boards. But 'tis a silly place.
And the only other place I regularly go are the literotica forums.
I’m a Farker. Actually, I’m a Total Farker.
I’m a doper (Charter Member I have no life.
and I’m a craftster . (all crafts stuff.)
This place rawks.
A lot of SDMB posters also post at Fathom.org
Basically just Sax on the Web Forum. That’s sax, as in saxophones, which I play, collect, and exhibit nerdlike behavior about.
I read the forums over at www.theusuals.net fairly often (link at the top of the page) It’s a general interest board, but way, way smaller than this one.
I don’t use any other general discussion boards, you guys keep me quite happy in that department.
My other frequented boards are ShowDog.com, which is actually an on-line game with several message boards to discuss game stratagies and dogs in general, and Legolas’ Keep, which is a crazy bunch of middle aged women that live with virtual Elves… ‘clones’ of Legolas, and we write silly posts about our day-to-day life with them and participate in RPGs.
My Elf’s name is Jaimar, by the way .
I like The Cellar, especially the photo section.
The best general-interest forums I know of besides the SDMB are the Something Awful.com forums, located at http://forums.somethingawful.com/index.php? .
The bad news: You have to pay to post there too, there’s generally an immature vibe over there (they’re certainly not dedicated to fighting ignorance), they can seem insular and in-jokey, the mods ban people like crazy for minor infractions, and the boards seem so spread-out and vast that it can be overwhelming – they’re much larger overall than the SDMB, with many more posters.
The good news: You can still talk about pretty much whatever you want with plenty of people, and the folks on the music, movies, TV, and comic book forums have been very cool as long as I’ve been there (since the beginning of the year). I say check 'em out, but don’t bother paying if you’re not comfortable with the atmosphere.
Also, if you watch any TV, the Television Without Pity forums are well worth joining (they’re free), or at least reading: http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?&&CODE=00
No offense to the Dope, but with the exception of Sampiro and Eve, the funniest, wittiest, snarkiest, most sarcastic people online all seem to post on TWoP. There’s plenty of high-level discussion going on there too, with a very high signal-to-noise ratio, and the mods ensure good behavior. The site also features hilarious weekly recaps of most of your favorite shows, in tandem with the commentary on the forums.
I registered there in December and I’ve been quite happy with it. I thought posters were being banned for ridiculous reasons until I read the reasons (they have a separate section where you can see who was banned/suspended and why). Most posters were banned/suspended mainly for not following the rules. They discourage “me too” posts big time.
There’s usually a lot more active posters at any given time. Threads tend to get responses almost instantaneously. For example, the weekly 24 thread will end up with several hundred responses before the show is even over.
I wouldn’t say the general feeling is immature, it’s more like they are less uptight. I haven’t noticed as much nitpicking as I have in other places.
Okay, I can see that. But basically, a well-behaved Doper would fit in just fine over there, as far as following the rules and not stirring up trouble.
I do enjoy the instant-feedback TV threads. Last week, for the intense season finale of The Shield, it was lots of fun to keep hitting “Refresh” to read people’s stunned reactions in real time.
I am The Dope thy Board, which have brought thee out of the land of bewilderment, and the bondage of ignorance. Thou shalt have no other message boards before me!
