I would think that the “queer” in this sense is the original meaning of the word meaning “odd” or “out of place”. A three-dollar bill would certainly be odd. Taking it as far as “couldn’t/shouldn’t” exist is stretching it a bit too far
Yeah, speaking as a queer, I’m not at all offended by Emtar’s use of the phrase. Or the association with certain modes of speech with homosexuality. While it’s true that not every man with an effeminate manner is gay, it’s generally a pretty reliable indicator, in my experience. I’m certainly not bothered by the idea that a cartoon creator might give a character a gay “accent” as a subtle (and deniable) nod of inclusion towards gays.
If the characters are going to deal with issues of sexuality then have them deal with issues of sexuality. If they’re not then don’t. Giving a character a stereotypically gay voice does not feel particularly inclusive to me nor does it seem like a subtle act of defiance against conservative heteronormativity. If anything, I think it feeds into some common stereotypes about gay people that I found difficult enough to deal with when I was growing up and I’m not very interested in having them perpetuated.
I’m not entirely sure what your arguing against. In this thread, a character was mentioned who spoke with an affect stereotypically associated with gays, as a possible example of a gay cartoon character. Are you objecting to the existence of this character, or simply the inference that the character might be gay, based on the way he speaks?
Kim Possible: Señor Señor, Junior displayed stereotypically gay effeminate qualities, but he only ever had the hots for Shego and Kim. (“You are my BLUE FOX!”)
Bambi: I had my suspicions about Flower until that pretty female skunk won his heart.
Robin Hood: Prince John and Sir Hiss sleep in the same room, with Hiss’s tongue occasionally getting close enough to tickle John’s feet.
The Lion King: Timon and Pumbaa’s ho-yay is even more noticeable in The Lion King 1 1/2.
Bolt: I wouldn’t call Rhino’s obsessive hero-worship of Bolt, love, exactly, but it’s awfully cute.
Tangled: Vladimir collects ceramic unicorns. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I don’t think there are any explicitly gay characters in Disney canon, though. Would hate to upset conservatives.
Don’t know about them, but ABCFamily has a pleasantly surprising amount of gay content for a channel with “family” in the title, but then they don’t seem to shy away from teen sex or substance use either.
