Are there difficulties connecting multiple players to PS3?

I’ve been trying to search this online, and not finding any definitive answers. I don’t want to find out Christmas morning I should have bought some little doohickey.

The PS3 has only two USB ports (I bought one of the new holiday bundle ones, if it matters). Is there a problem connecting more than two controllers? Do the controllers connect to a USB bluetooth dongle, or is the bluetooth receiver internal? Does one USB dongle connect to multiple controllers, or do I need USB hubs to have four controllers at once?

For Rock Band 3, do the guitars, drum and keyboard connect through bluetooth as well, or do I need something else for this?

What about the microphones? Those have to be regular USB microphones, right? If I wanted two or three microphones plus two guitars and keyboard and drums, what will I need?

If I need a USB hub, can it be unpowered, or does it need to be powered? Also, it doesn’t need to be PS3 branded, does it?

Anyone have experience with the PS2 to PS3 converters? Do they work well? This would be only for a regular controller, used on PS3 games only.

Thanks in advance.

THE PS3 controllers are wireless. People just push the PS button on their controller and the machine picks it up (at least supports 4, I don’t know if more than that can be added or not). The USB is for charging and recharging the controllers.

There is also a setting somewhere that lets you change controllers in the middle of a one player game (useful at times).

If you want to play on chirstmas morning, it may take a while for all the controllers to get charged, or I suppose you could charge 2 and play with 2 hooked up to the USB.

And I don’t have Rock Band or Guitar Hero, so I don’t know how all those gadgets connect, but I would be really surprised if you needed something other that what you have already bought.

Total support is seven devices at once. That’s PS3 controllers, Move controllers, the BD/DVD remote, and (I think) Bluetooth headsets. Bluetooth is internal, as is the WiFi connection. I agree that, while I haven’t played Rock Band or Guitar Hero, that everything that comes in the box should work fine without buying anything new. One thing you do have to do is to sync the controllers with the PS3. I don’t remember the exact procedure, but you basically just plug in the controller via USB, turn on the PS3, and push the PS button on the controller.

You may want to get something like this or this, depending on your system and what’s available near in a store near you. I’ve found it preferable to charge without hooking up the controller into the USB port.

I have a couple Guitar Hero games (Aerosmith and GH3), and they require a dongle. I know nothing about Rock Band or the GH with drums and stuff - but I have the two dongles, and a USB dongle that I need to sync my logitech universal remote to the PS3. All I did was attach a $5 USB hub, and it works just fine.

Thanks everyone. The keyboard dongle is supposed to have two USB ports itself. I might not need a hub then. I’ll look when the keyboard arrives.
