I moved to Portland from Upstate NY this year. It’s now apple season … and I can’t find any Macs! Do they not grow them here? Are they for some reason unable to grow them here? Did the stupid Fuji and Empire apples just push them all out of the market? (Even the Farmer’s Market?)
Well, I have an iMac…
This site says of Jonagold apples:
This implies that there are McIntosh apples here, as they are popular in B.C.
On the other hand, the Washington State Apple Commission does not have McIntosh apples on their website.
I suspect they were paid off by Bill Gates.
You’re in upstate New York and you’re missing Washington apples?
Try a Stayman Winesap, a nice crisp tasty Macoun, or if you want something really tart, try a R.I. Greening. The only time I ever regret living in the West is during apple season.
No, he moved TO Portland FROM New York.
I believe you’ve got it backwards there. He/she moved to Portland.
Well then, … never mind.
:smack: :smack: :smack:
What I’ve heard here in Wenatchee (Apple Capital of the World, or so we claim), McIntosh orchards have been mostly pushed out by Fuji orchards over the last couple decades. I have no cite, other than what other locals have told me when I’ve asked this same question. I don’t know what the situation is in Yakima.
Don’t be ragging on the Fuji. I suggest you give a Jonagold a try. Or a Braeburn. And for a fruit salad, cut up some Pink Pearls.
But if you must disparage an apple, hurl your disgust upon the Red Delicious, which surely sprang from a pile of horse apples.
I just bought some McIntosh apples at Safeway last week. I don’t live in Portland, though. I live about 30 miles south of Seattle.
To be honest, thought, it’s a rarity to see them there.
Um, there are more apples in any randomly-selected warehouse/cannery in Wenatchee or Yakima than there are in the entire state of New York.
?? New York is the second-largest Apple-producing state in the US

Admittedly it does produce about 1/4 of Washington State apple output. But hey - -don’t be a hater.
