Are there other Hollywood bigwigs about to fall?

Well think about this: What would we all do if someone you admired and trusted, maybe a relative or close friend, came out and said “yeah, I knew all about it but kept quiet because he helped my career”? I mean could you ever respect that person again?

Rich powerful people are able to avoid or mitigate the consequences of their actions? Shocked I tell you. People will look the other way if it benefits them? Oh the humanity. I agree with Novelty Bobble, upthread, there is a distinct element of Captain Renault here. (Meryl Streep I am looking at you). It was an open secret that they joked about it on sitcoms for fucks sake. Brad Pitt even once threatened to beat up Weinstein and yet still worked with him.

I don’t think this will change much. People who are influential will be able to wriggle out of it. They’ll occasionally offer some sacrificial lamb up to placate the plebs and claim that “we are learning and we are horrified, and its time to let the healing begin” and other cliches they produce. And let’s face facts, Weinstein had two things against him, his power had reduced substantially a few years ago and more importantly even besides his sexual predilections he was a major asshole; most people hated him and were/are happy to see him hang out to dry.

People still with power and those who can take other with them and who manage to remain on good terms with the rest, they are safe.

I have read that Queen Latifah personally pegs the star of every Academy Award nominee and DiCaprio’s reluctance was the only reason he was snubbed for so long.:p:smack:

This is an industry which produces rumours and outlandish claims about sexual adventures on a daily basis. Some of them even true (ejaculating into a potted plant; geez, what did the plant ever do to deserve that.:frowning: ) How do you believe what is true and what is not indeed? I think predators depend on the background noise to remian safe.

Right. I really don’t think there’s that much else to find here. This is the industry that spawned TMZ and the paparazzi, and which chews up aspiring stars and spits them out daily. There are any number of has-beens and never-weres who would have been happy to provide dirt on Hollywood bigwigs for a payday. Some of them have doubtless been paid for silence, but the industry couldn’t have nobbled them all.

Woody Allen has already commented that he feels the Weinstein thing should not result in a “witch hunt.” The reason he’s saying that is that he’s one of the witches.

Hollywood is a seamstress?

we’re talking about a group of people who gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation at the Academy Awards.

Which he couldn’t attend in person, because, you know…

I knew my sentiments would already be expressed; but I’ll say them anyway.
From the rumors, it seems like Casey Affleck is a lot worse than Ben. The Louis CK is pretty recent news to me; but it seems to have a ring of validity.

I’m hoping now that we have a few exposed; Corey Feldman will speak out who molested him. I’ve always thought it was real; but he’ll finally be heard even though Barbara Wawa believed him to be damaging an entire industry.

Wow. Just read up a little on Casey Affleck. I had entirely missed the news of his alleged sexual harassment/assault. I’ll be going back under my rock for a nap now.

…I think its already changed a lot already.

Just today Bob Weinstein has been called out for the hypocrite that he is.

Jamie King.

Amanda Segel.

A year ago most people would have collectively rolled their eyes at these accusations and move on, not knowing “who to believe.”

But that doubt is gone now.

There was a gigantic machine that crushed woman (and men) that came forward with their stories. That machine has been massively undercut with what has happened here. There is a solidarity and a determination to make things right for the next generation. This story is bigger than Weinstein. Its about an industry that has systematically discriminated against women and people of colour since it came into existence. To keep on going as it always had is unsustainable. Change isn’t going to happen overnight. But we are much better placed to make change now than we were even just a few years ago. Movies with diverse casting like Spiderman have been financially successful, movies with woman directors have been box-office blockbusters. Hollywood can’t continue to be a place where only 4 women have been nominated for an academy award for directing and only 1 woman has won. Hollywood has run out of excuses. And we need to stop excusing Hollywood.

The pervasiveness of it all is pretty shit.

Straight men are not exempt from harassment either. I never thought Rob Schneider was gay, and apparently he isn’t, but he claims that he’s experienced sexual harassment from men, or at least a man, too.

SFW.

However, he’s an antivaxxer which will open up a whole new can o’worms.

Kevin Spacey is a good bet to be one of the next in line.

Not to be argumentative, but I’m curious what makes you name him. As I’ve demonstrated by my complete ignorance of Casey Affleck’s issues, I’m not up on Hollywood rumors and allegations. But I wouldn’t have thought of Spacey as a likely abuser.

Plenty of stories out there. And I have no sense of the truth of them any more than I did as far as the Harvey stories I’d heard over the years.

The rumour is that he has a “casting couch” technique with young guys, and there’s been more and more mention of it in the last week or so, as if the dam is about to burst. But it’s about as well known as the Weinstein stuff in terms of industry chatter, AFAICT.

Ugh. Thanks. I did a cursory googling and saw a few things as well. I am just totally oblivious, I guess. The overwhelming majority of the entertainment I consume these days is aimed at children aged 6 and under. I did not realize so many Hollywood people were being named as possible abusers.

Of course I want sexual harassment and abuse to be punished and eradicated from our society. And I’m generally inclined to believe those who go public with allegations like this. I’ll just reserve judgement on specific cases till I learn more.

Anecdotally; I went to two WWE shows this week. Before both shows, they showed a PSA for paralyzed veterans, with Ben Affleck as the talking head.

The promo got booed out of the house, both times.

Vince McMahon also has rumours attached to him so be careful.

Well, if the stories about Macho Man and Steph are true, then Vince being a fink wouldn’t surprise me at all.
