Are there religions not based on faith and willful ignorance?

The religions I’m more familiar with (namely the Abrahamic ones) basically boil down to “So and so said so at God’s behest, so you must believe/do/be X”. As far as I can tell, you’re not really supposed to challenge those statements but instead take them on faith.

Are there any religions where this is not the case? Any that go “So and so might’ve said this, but the evidence is thin and further research is required” or “One of our prophets experienced this vision, but he was doubtful about it, and upon further investigation he realized he’d been mislead by a bad batch of herbs.”

Etc.

Not really GD material, I hope, but rather a factual question – just wondering if organized worship can thrive despite follower skepticism. Cecil notwithstanding.

I have tried to derail the train before it gets to the wreck site.

I think the OP poisons the well in the very title by using the phrase “wilful ignorance.” At any rate, even if this weren’t by it’s nature a GD question, it would become one within a few posts.

Please rephrase your question and open a new thread in Great Debates.
