I have a polo shirt (RL polo), which i like very much. Instead of buttons at the neck, it has magnets sewn into the cloth-so, if you want to button up, you just move the collar tabs together, and -voila!, the magnets hold the collar closed!
I haven’t seen this in any other brand, why would such a neat innovation be abandoned?
They might rust or otherwise tangle or disarray the wash; I could see that being a problem.
It didn’t sell.
What’s in it for the manufacturer? If they didn’t sell better than ones with cheap plastic buttons and cost more to manufacture, then it would be silly to keep marketing the product.
It occurs to me that there might be some inherent risk of demagnetizing important things like bus and subway or credit cards. I have all kinds of problems whenever I forget not to carry my camera in my bag where I keep my bus tickets…perhaps too many people just happened to wave their credit cards too near their collar?
I’m not sure it would have the same effect, but for forgetful folks like me, it’d be a problem.
I really can’t imagine a credit card would be demagnetized by waving it too close to your collar. As far as rusting is concerned… not all magnets are metal. I routinely toss my wallet containing all sorts of magnetic strips in the ‘cubby hole’ in my console of my car, where I also keep a very strong magnetic name badge. I’ve never experienced any problems.
There are some ladies purses with magnetic clasps that can de-magnetize cards on occasion. If you habitually rubbed your credit cards on your collar, there could be a problem…
