How’d you manage to know that yet escape knowing that even prior to government regulation some companies were building to some rather exacting standards, not to mention that even after government regulation a number of companies manage to build to far above the minimum standards set?
Oh no, Mr. Monty. Or is it Ms. Monty?
You didn’t ignore. One must ignore.
So Monty does not deny that some lawnmowers were built to unacceptably shoddy standards? Because if that’s the case, that’s all that is necessary to justify Big Guv.
Then again, I’m not exactly reproducing DT’s POV here.
On occasion Der will comment on fiction or physics without invoking stomped puppies. The effect is a little surreal.
Vis a vis Idaho: Without citation, we can’t tell whether Der actually made the sort of claims that Idaho said, or whether Der has driven that libertarian to the brink of hallucinatory characterization.
M4M! Dude! Long time no see! How’s it going? I miss our debates from the old days. It’s good to hear from you again. But now that my health is better and I’m not laid up in bed (and I have a real job again) I just don’t have the time to post all day on the SDMB.
I can’t believe you think that shoddy product standards in themselves justify government involvement. I’ve seen shitty movies. I’ve had a shitty pizza. Should the government get involved there, too? But let’s save that for another day.
Hallucinatory Characterization? Hey…I resemble that remark!
Good to see you again,
IdahoMauleMan
Heh. The most convincing libertarian arguments are the ones that only lean that way.
It’s a tradeoff. Reasonable conservatives can see the harm of early 1900 slaughterhouse standards, before Upton Sinclair succeeded in disgusting the public enough to demand government action. But liberals might pause before assuming that the hand of government will always be benevolent, subtle or disposed to the general good.
Yeah, it’s been too long. I’ve been popping in and of here as well. Glad to hear things are going well for you.
I neither confirmed nor denied that such lawnmowers were produced. I merely asked how Der Trihs knows what he asserted to know.
IdahoMauleMan: It’s Mr.
You meanthey’re not? Bearing in mind **DT **was referring to dangerous lawnmowers, not just ones that cut your lawn crap.
Speaking as a corrosive cynic and part-time attention whore myself, I have to say that Der is too much for even me sometimes. His worldview is that there is NO WAY OUT, yet somehow, he cannot give up. Either because he’s convinced he’s right or because he can’t stand to be wrong.
I too agree with a certain part of his rhetoric. I believe he’s mentioned how severely society has smooshed together the ideals of free enterprise and patriarchy. Yes, patriarchy. Not too many Dopers will even type the p-word. I believe there is such a thing, and that most of us refuse to discuss it because it will make us seem to belong to some group we’re really not part of. Der at least is free to entertain the concept; mostly on SDMB you can’t even critique it intelligently. It’s just off limits. I have a feeling that’s not the only thing he brings up that is otherwise off limits. Being a crazy pariah gets you some carte blanche.
I review Fark.com’s Caturday threads to get the same effect. Kitteeeeh!
I just wanted to pop in and point out the humor implicit in reviving an old thread and taking it to four pages when the topic is about how we should ignore someone.
No, no, coming across as an effete candy ass disqualifies one from receiving any apology.
At this rate, if they ignore me any harder, they’ll be moving in with me.
Agreed. On both counts.
Best I can surmise, he’s off somewhere fellating Barry Goldwater’s emaciated cock and getting drunker than a barrel full of monkeys on the fermented jizz.
Enough with the goddamn smilies, for fuck’s sake! Or are you, in fact, a twelve year old girl?
He’s banned actually and can’t answer.
And if one’s candy ass is fertile?
Well then, that’s different.
Oops.
Guess I should start a-payin’ more attention to both the post dates and the status under the username, huh?
Just want to add my belated response to the OP: I treat Trihs like anyone else. In every forum but GD, he’s a fun poster. In GD, if he makes a real point, I treat him like anyone else. If he snipes, I ignore him–again, just like everyone else.
I suggest we just do that, and not have to pick out any particular poster, no matter how annoying they are. Just pit them if you find them too annoying.
I have participated in every Der Trihs pitting since I joined. Even started a few myself. It’s not worth the energy, but I keep doing it out of habit.
