Maybe you misunderstand what being a hater is. It’s being a snitch and/or putting your nose in other people’s business that doesn’t concern you. A person who turns in a serious criminal isn’t a hater. It’s when a person goes out of thier way to corcern themselves with minor issues. If you were at work reading the SDMB, and your co-worker told the boss you were slacking off, even though you consistantly get your work done, he would be a hater. If you turn in your neighbor for stealing cable or downloading a movie, then you are a hater. It is basic respect. Stay out of other people’s business when it doesn’t concern you.

I wish to submit that a ‘hater’ is more of a jealousy/anger type thing, where as the description above more likely suits the word ‘killjoy’. Subtle difference, IMO.

Examples of Hatin’:

If you hate the guy that gets the girl, you’re a hater.
If you hate Ja Rule over 50 Cent, you’re a hater.
If you you’re mad at everything, and make snide remarks about stupid shit, you’re a hater. (Maybe you’ve heard it. Ever been accused of drinking hatorade? :eek: )

These are examples of being a hater. Where as a killjoy would do the snitching type stuff. Also the type that likes to ruin everyones fun.

Way over yonder in GD, brickbacon offers up a definition of a “hater.” I’m tossing this into the Pit because I can’t help but be repulsed by the label and I have nothing good to say about it. I’m not pitting brickbacon, except maybe tangentially; I’m pitting the “hater” thing, and any use of “you” is purely in the generic sense. Got it? Good. Let’s roll. Yes, Virginia, there are nosy, lying bastards aplenty in this world. There are busybodies and snoops and control freaks and all kinds of people who like nothing better than to give you a colonoscopy with their pointed, twitchy little noses. And certainly nobody likes a tattletale, particularly the octogenarian bachelor with a vendetta against those who dare to flush toilets past the sacred hour of ten PM.

But when did this whole “hater” thing start? And who buys into this shit?

Most people “buy into this shit”. Thats why people hate tattletales. The general thing people take exception to, in both cases, is similar. People didn’t label these people as hater until recently, but the sentiment has been there.

Labeling the person who confronts you as a “hater” is a transparent attempt to deflect responsibility away from your wrongdoing and onto the person who caught you. Your brains have twisted up, turned black and crawled out onto your pillow if you think I’m failing to show “basic respect” by turning a blind eye to your petty thefts, your constant screwing off on company time, or your fervent belief that the fire lane outside my window is a dandy place for all your pals to park because you can’t be bothered to shamble your saggy-pants asses the extra fifteen feet to the empty spaces across the way. If there’s a fire, I’m going to be out there using your Honda as a platform to hose down my roof. And I’ll be wearing cleats.

You seem to be getting a little too emotional about all these things. You shouldn’t take these things personally. If it doesn’t affect you, why do you care if someone is screwing off on company time? I could see if you had some stake in it. If you have a friendship with the boss/owner, or something like that. Otherwise, it just seems to me like meddling.

The label has nothing to do with deflecting blame. A person is responsible for his or her own actions. I don’t know where you get this idea from.

Perhaps the language I’m using makes it sound like I hate you. I don’t. I may think you’re an inconsiderate asshole, but that is a transient state which can be remedied by the careful application of a rolled-up newspaper. If I hated you, I’d skip the newspaper and go straight to the baseball bat. What I hate are your actions, and they’ve got to be patently immoral, illegal, or dangerous before I’ll confront you about it, much less report your ass to the Powers That Be. If that makes me a “hater,” I want my bumper sticker so I can wear the label with pride.

Exactly when are we gonna get past the point in which any slang used by the hip-hop community is an excuse for some asshole to trot out thier worst ebonics impression. Please take note: This is not funny, nor was it ever particularly funny. It is thinly veiled racism and is extremely annoying to see on a regular basis. There is not good argument why hip-hop/balck slang is more disruptive, discordant, or unintelligible than any other colloquial language. This is not a matter of liguistic interference, it a matter of arrogance and prejudice. If you have a problem with the way the term “hater” was applied, I can understand that. What I don’t understand is the repudiation of anything one might consider “black slang”. For a group of supposedly tolerent people, many of you can be surprisingly narrow minded and bigoted.

I was cut out of my dear Daddy’s will because I refused to subscribe to his racist beliefs. To him, the white people were the masters and people of any other color were servants and just barely human. People of mixed parentage were “mongrels” in his view. He actually and truly severed relations with one of his grand daughters because she married a man whose daughter by a previous marriage had a child fathered by her black husband.

I am not a racist and I resent being branded as one.
