Are you allowed to insult a banned poster?

There is a no insult rule in effect everywhere except in the Pit. This ATMB ranting thread by pseudotriton ruber ruber quickly got closed but without a repremand.

Yet almost every comment he put in the thread is an insult, any one of which would earn a warning anywhere else.

Yeah, he knew that scottmcdonald had already been banned and so technically was no longer a SDMB user.

So get out your microtomes and semantic parsers and come up with a ruling on this. Can we just unload on everyone who has ever been banned here?

Isn’t that exactly why they lock threads with or about banned posters? Because the administration says that it’s rude to unload on people who can’t defend themselves? A charge to which, I would say, shouldn’t have gotten themselves banned, then. But as is clear to anyone who reads ATMB often, it is rare that I see eye to eye with the admins.

I’m not sure about banned posters, but there doesn’t seem to be a rule against insulting suspended posters.

There is a fine line somewhere. We don’t allow insulting of other posters (aside from in the Pit), but we DO allow insulting of non-posters (ranging from politicians and celebrities to mothers-in-law and landlords.)

Mods will need to discuss this, we’ll be back to you.

What if someone really likes a politician, so he creates an account in the politician’s name? BAM insult proof.

Actually, almost nothing that I wrote in that post was a personal insult. If you trouble to look at it, every commment was either not insulting at all, or directly referred to the OP’s grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, logic etc. One of the more insulting comments was “You’re entitled to hold stupid opinions,” which I think is a classic approved non-Pit comment, in which I’m clearly labelling the opinions, and not the poster, stupid.

I think you should have been warned for intentionally posting a load of crap knowing full well it didn’t belong in ATMB.

Won’t work. Doper names get bolded, but not politician names. Gotcha!

Case in point: I first noticed Wesley Clark appearing here in bold about the same time it was all over the media that Wesley Clark ought to run for president. I never found out for sure if they’re two different people. I assume they must be… right?

While you’re at it… how about distinguishing between “name-calling” and true insults.

Stuff and nonsense. I had a minor bone to pick with Marley (that he had correctly banned the OP while I was composing my lengthy response to him) and I included a request to move my response from ATMB to wherever he felt appropriate. Normally, people don’t banned just for posting stupid shit, not without a couple days’ worth of warnings, Mod notes, etc. and this quick banning caught me short, so where else was I supposed to place my quibbling?

We need a clarification on what constitutes an insult, IMO. Stating that a salamander is slimy or that shit stinks is insult to neither the salamander nor the shit.

If a banned member is being insulted because of what he or she wrote on the SDMB, then it seems to me that he’s being insulted in his capacity as a poster, and not for his or her general conduct in the world at large, as a non-poster.

But if he’s banned he’s not a poster anymore. And there are plenty of other problems too. What if it turns out Mitt Romney is a doper? Are we all going to jackbooted for the insults hurled at him? And what if a banned doper still has a sock account active?

Of course the easy solution is to get rid of the kindergarten insult rules and stop pretending dopers aren’t constantly insulting each other.

There’s a fine line. But here’s the point. If you go all PIT over a current poster, they can defend themselves or flame back.

Attacking a banned poster means they have no chance to fight back, and it rather cowardly and unsportsmanlike.

Now sure, many short term posters are just spamsters socks & trolls, and a quick shot at that sort of activity is a fair go. So if Spam mc Spamerton posts and gets banned, I have no problem with a flaming pitting of that sort of spamster in general, using Spam mc Spamerton as an example. Besides they know what they are.

But when they ban some long term poster, it’s not fair to pile on. I mean, yes if someone sez “I miss XXXX” a response could be “I don’t, he was a jerk”. But long involved personal flamings are really unfair.

As far as prr rant goes, it made my eyes bleed & my brain hurt so I had to stop reading it.

Again?

In a new thread in the same forum as the original, with a link. Or in the Pit, with gratuitous insults added. Those would be the obvious places, as opposed to ATMB where the comments were definitely off topic.

Even the comments addressing the unfortunate timing of Marley’s modding? I think I would have gotten a warning for posting comments about that OUTSIDE of ATMB.

No one’s commented on how off-base Exapno’s remarks about how “insult-filled” my insult-free post was, btw. I mean if you accuse someone of pitting someone else outside of the Pit, and that’s your entire point, and it’s wrong, you’d think someone would care a little bit, wouldn’t you? Maybe not.

Agreed.

In your very first sentence you said: psuedotriton ruber ruber wrote:

So you call the guy an idiot, clearly and as plain as day. What if I called you that? Do you think it would be a violation of rules for this forum? But apparently it’s okay, if they’re banned. But then again you won’t even admit you’ve been insulting. So either you’re not being honest or you’re worse than the person you’re putting down for being an “idiot”.

I am tired of your whining and will be done with reading your posts for now on, you’re not worth the time to address. Get a life. And I will be taking that advice as well (regarding you).
