People are posting phone numbers for counselling services and silly things like that. I get there are some concerns if you live in the US, but these are people in Australia. He is not president of Australia. He doesn’t make the laws here. Nothing he says or does will interfere with your ability in Australia to live an alternative lifestyle, blame White Dudes for all of Australia’s problems, sew your own baskets, write angsty poetry, or whatever the hell else it is the perpetually offended do.
And heaven forbid someone say “Look, I’m really not all that worried about it, and as someone with some centre-right political views a shift in that direction actually suits me just fine”. Again, epic pile-ons, name calling and frothy, frothy outrage - all from folks on the Anti-Trump/Anti-Right side of the political divide.
It’s weird, it’s like no-one on the centrist right hand side of politics knows how to use the internet or something; my experience is literally 100 lefties and maybe three or four centrist/right folks. From IRL conversations it seems most folks are, like me, just staying out of it.
We already live in a third world country and have another year or so left on our visas, so we will just watch and see how weird things get. I will keep a closer eye on the investments than I normally would but beyond that, I will just hope that things don’t get too stupid.
I’m changing my work schedule so I don’t work with a hard core Trumper who refuses to shut up. I wish my job description consisted of refreshing Drudge or Fox News every 30 seconds and getting outraged about everything.
I am watching the daily press briefings and reading political blogs. While I usually follow politics, if Clinton had won as expected, I wouldn’t be following nearly as closely.
It’s not likely, but the possibility is not zero. “Faith in our people”?? That’s a good one.
You haven’t read much history, have you? It’s neither funny nor silly. We laughed all through the campaign because no one took the Trumpster seriously. Now we’re stuck with him until Congress locates their gonads. This man has a temper tantrum when he’s satirized on SNL. He can’t open his mouth without lying. He has access to the nuclear codes. He is not funny.
I’m a news junkie. I’ve scaled back since the election. Same with social media.
I’m also a fed. I have a personal/professional need to stay informed. What the media is saying is perhaps 95 percent of what is really occurring. The other four percent I get thru fed channels is scary. The remaining one percent thru fed channels is absolutely terrifying.
So you are just giving the country to the president? I think America is a lot more than a bunch of politicians. I am flying the flag every day just as usual.
And to whoever it was that said nobody thought Trump would win, this is just plain wrong. Maybe YOU didn’t think so but some were trying to tell the powers that be that it was a real risk.
And to everyone that thinks this country is going to change dramatically in the next four years, I don’t agree. We are tougher than that. We have survived a lot in the past and we will live through this too. And maybe some of you should stop watching so much news and reading Facebook.
I was hoping to see more posts like yours. I did a lot of these things, too- Set up monthly donations to Planned Parenthood and ACLU, I went to DC for the Women’s March (I have never marched/protested in my life), started reading the news every day when previously my news source was primarily The Daily Show. I know a lot of people who have suddenly joined a lot of activist groups and like you, Facebook friends are coming out of the woodwork to give me links to daily actions. I call senators a few times a week, once again something I have never done in my life.
What America is depends on a lot of factors, a huge one of which is a voluntary agreement among people in power that some lines are not to be crossed. Trump and the congressional republicans are willing to cross those lines if they are in their way.
And it only takes a relatively small proportion of the population to be willing to cross those lines before we go over the edge.
The barbarians are way past the gate. They hold the keep and there’s very little standing in their way.
I’m outfitting an old tramp steamer with powerful engines that can outrun anything the US Navy has, and using it to smuggle out any Americans who are both rich enough to pay my exorbitant prices and anxious to avoid Republican entanglements as they carry secret documents to their Rebel brethren. Nope, sorry, that was Star Wars.
They have thrown their lot in with the toiling masses and are willing to bankroll fugitives. Hell, they might even convince me that there’s more to life than mercenary self-interest, and cause me to throw in my lot with them at a crucial juncture.
I stopped watching cable news on Nov 9, and started supporting my two favorite news organizations by getting paid subscriptions. I’m also making small donations to ACLU and Planned Parenthood.
Other than that, I’m cutting spending @ home and saving more money.
As a federal employee, I was just told that several vacancies were cancelled as a result of his hiring freeze. Those vacancies would have been a direct promotion from me, and I have reason to believe I would have been a shoe-in for any of them based on my most recent performance review(s) and discussions with my supervisor.
Now, my boss told me that due to “doing more with less,” I am literally taking job duties from the aforementioned vacancies at my current position for no additional pay.
A remedy, “in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers” is right there in the Constitution. It’s in the Preamble to the Bill of Rights, one of which is the Second Amendment. The founders gave me the right to bear arms, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of the Constitution’s powers, and the time is nigh.
