You know you don’t have to read every single thing that shows up, right?
The funny thing is BEFORE the election, there were all kinds of posts claiming how great the new Pres is gonna be, including cool catch phrases like “Jail Her!” and “Build a Wall”
Then, moving toward the actual inauguration, all those people on my feed started NOT posting stuff. Probably because there is little for them to be positive about going on today.
It’s great for me though! I laugh all day, every day! And will continue until the nukes start raining down
For what reasons would you respect your country? Serious question. What, exactly, are the factors that you would consider to be relevant, in weighing your decision whether to respect any country in general or your own in particular?
What did the presidency of Hugo Chavez do to your level of respect for Venezuela? Muammar Qaddafi, on your respect for Libya?
Any country that can elect Trump is not deserving of respect. A country that can elect Trump is not the country with the values I thought my country had. A country that can elect Trump is a country that has no respect for me.
(In any case I highly object to patriotic rituals being performed at commercial entertainment events. It’s very fascistic. The national anthem should only be played at official affairs of state .)
Look, its a noble cause and in my life I’ve missed the boat a number of times over noble causes. Maybe one of a hundred reasons I hate Drumpf is that I was never much of a businessman.
You fly that flag & I’ll admire you for it… but don’t go asking me to stand in front of you when you do or march in front of you or to take a bullet for you while you do it.
You asked about changes? Sometimes I keep my head down and off the radar of the VICHY government. Its one of the few luxuries that I can still afford.
It’s not the president, it’s the horrible people in America who elected him. I honestly don’t believe we are countrymen anymore and I’m ashamed of what America has become.
I watch a lot less cable news and listen to more NPR. I subscribed to the Washington Post and The New York Times. I’ve made two donations to Planned Parenthood and one to the NEA.
On Facebook I’m careful not to mock Trump supporters. Keep the anger directed at Trump and the GOP. When I post something, I try to argue why it’s a bad idea instead of simply shouting. I will not engage with trolls.
I’m trying to live life with as much kindness and dignity towards my fellow human beings as possible, which isn’t always easy in the reddest of red states.
I love my landlady and her family dearly, even though I disagree with them about Trump, but they’ve become a bit more obnoxious since the election. The other day, the gas price at the Shell station went down by one or two cents, and my landlord said, “The Trumpster’s doing it!”
Are you doing anything in your life differently because of the new President?
Some, not much. I’m already prepared for emergencies that require me to be self-sufficient for at least 6 months without outside inputs, probably much longer. That’s because of the very real earthquake threat in my area.
I did do a thorough seed inventory to make sure I round out any deficiencies and decided to keep two pigs for longer than I want to. The rooster I planned to rendition received a reprieve, in case I decide to let a hen or two go broody and raise up a fresh flock.
Already subscribed to the New Yorker, NYT and WaPo. Made new contributions to Planned Parenthood, ACLU, the Union for Concerned Scientists and and Free Speech TV, then tickled dates every six months to keep making those donations.
Marched in my local Women’s March and will participate also in sister marches held for the scientists and on tax day.
I’ve sent several atta-boys to my Congress critters. They’re already doing what is right and I let them know I appreciate it.
I wear a safety pin every time I am in public.
I have resolved to have an honest conversation via email with my parents, with whom I have maintained an uneasy detente over politics ever since Fox “News” rose to prominence. I just can’t ignore their views any longer. I don’t expect to persuade them to feel other than they do, but I will be honest with them about how much it is hurting me.
I won’t any longer stay silent in the pursuit of peaceful discourse. I will speak my mind, citing evidence for my opinions, every chance I get, if I feel I can make an inroad away from fantasy dangers such as voter fraud and fear of those of the Islamic faith. I will torment anyone who denies climate change within my hearing with facts that show how wrong they are. All they ever cite are the same old tired talking points anyway… usually pretty easy to dispel their misinformation. Some people are too far gone to waste the breath, but others are actually interested in learning what’s true, and simply haven’t had the time to research it thoroughly.
When I spend more time scrolling past stuff going “nope, nope, don’t care, don’t care, oh for FFS not another fucking Minion meme about the US president…” than I do getting to do normal social media stuff, it’s a real issue.
I scaled back looking at politics shows/sites after the election, I guess I generally do after elections. Now that the new admin has actually taken office I’m back to looking at them a little more again, to see what actually happens as opposed to endless spin and speculation. But except for whatever little extra portion of my time is spent following politics, no nothing different in my real life.
The thing about real name social media, which I have nothing to do with and don’t get why anybody would, but obviously many others disagree, is people set up expectations under their real name. They are the great SJW’s, or the great MAGA’s, or whatever and get locked into feeling they have to act out dramatically if their side doesn’t win the election. That pressure is less on an anonymous forum, though even so not absent. But I wonder if some of these people are really as worked up as they claim to be and what’s wrong with them if they are.
On the federal level, I called and wrote my senators in support of the ACA. On the state level, I wrote my representative and met with him to oppose the new, even stupidèr proposed bill to force our state Counseling Board to write a new code of ethics so we can discriminate against gay people more effectively. I also started a Facebbok group to encourage other therapists to lobby agáinst the bill.
