You did nothing? Fuck you

If you put a MAGA sticker on your car, fuck you.
If you donated to Trump’s campaign, fuck you.
If you voted for Trump, fuck you.
If you did not vote for the one candidate who could beat him, fuck you.
If you didn’t vote but could have, fuck you.

Actively supported trump? Fuck you.
Sat out the election? Fuck you.
Voted for some third party to make a point? Fuck you.

Wanted all of this to happen? Fuck you.
Thought none of this was important enough? Fuck you.
Didn’t care enough to make a minimal effort to stop it? Fuck you.

This is on the ballot and you vote for it? Fuck you.
This is on the ballot and that itself is not motivating enough to try and stop it? Fuck you.

You did nothing.
Fuck you.

312 Electoral votes, 31 states, 77.3mil primary votes, 85.9 million eligible voters who didn’t.

That’s a fucking lot of fucks.

I wonder what percentage of those nonvoters who didn’t care enough to vote would have voted for trump had they voted.

That’s a really good question. One thing that’s clear is that they didn’t perceive Trump to be the disaster that many others foresaw. I would venture to guess that the majority of these fuckers were low-information types, and that if all eligibile voters had in fact turned out, the regrettable results would have been the same, only with larger numbers.

Low voter turnout is a classic problem in America, but low-information voters is a much worse problem.

Trump still would have won in 2024 even if everyone had turned out to vote, Pew finds

[snip]

44% of 85.9mil = 37.8mil

In 2016, they might have been able to claim they didn’t know what a disaster Trump would be, but in the 2024 election every single voter who voted for Trump knew fully well who he was and what he was.

The real problem, whatever their motivation, is voters who don’t vote the way you do.

I don’t know WTF this is supposed to mean, but Trump is objectively a vapid self-serving blowhard, irredeemably corrupt, ineffably stupid (just look at the expression of utter cluelessness in any picture of him) and a convicted felon. Voting for such a person to be president of the USA should be considered a criminal act.

And some people don’t care, as long as it doesn’t call itself a Democrat.

An asshole who doesn’t vote the way I do is still an asshole.

This may well be objectively true. It’s also objectively true that the average American is a whole lot closer to Trumps views of internal and external priorities, policies and governance than the views expressed on this 'ere message board.

And I did nothing objective to deny 45 getting his 47 either. So guess I’m fucked too.

Shit! I voted. That’s why I can’t get laid!

There are two big problems with American democracy. One is common to all populations in all countries. It’s the fact that the average IQ is 100, and presumably the median is very close to that. Which is a pretty low bar and it means that roughly half of Americans, or half of any random population, are dumbasses.

But the second huge problem in America is extremely distorted and falsified “news” coming from sources like Fox “News”, which isn’t news at all but right-wing propaganda, and the likes of Newsmax and social media, all lying to the voters. Democracy isn’t just about being able to vote, it’s about voting with access to accurate facts. And American voters have been deprived of this access for many decades. I think a minority are genuine fascists, and many are just plain racists, but most of the rest are just hoodwinked victims of propaganda.

UK poster here, but equally perplexed at how our politicians are so out of touch with the majority.

Trump over there and Farage here are symptoms of a political class that no longer listens to the electorate but instead wants to tell them what they should think and do.

Everyone is concentrating on the symptoms (bad as they are) instead of saying how are we so far out of touch that we are losing.

I disagree. I think they allow themselves to be hoodwinked because they are xenophobic and willfully refuse to use critical thinking skills.

But how did they get that way? Think about it for a moment. Unless you believe in the reality of racism, it could only have been through a constant drumbeat of counterfactual propaganda.

I totally agree.
I also believe there is a lot more simmering racism that many are willing to admit.

But … Right wing media has absorbed every facet of radio, television and the internet algorithms adjust to the individual’s choices. Throw in the foreign bots and the right wing narrative is secured.

For years this propaganda has been broadcast everywhere - stores, medical offices, hotels etc.

Now the consequences of the last 40+ year right wing media blast are coming to fruition.

Can I add:

If you sat down at Thanksgiving dinner with MAGA, fuck you.

Didn’t call out your relative’s racism because you didn’t want to cause a scene, fuck you.

I think part of the problem is not just that many voters are low information voters, but also voters have very bad memories. They had 4 years for their memories of the first trainwreck to fade. I think this is the reason why Republican administrations keep getting voted in at all, when pretty much every Democratic administration since WWII has had better economic numbers. But there still seems to be this stubborn myth that Republican admins in general are better for the economy.
