I have no idea where I picked this up, and I don’t really know what it means, but it’s memorable enough that I’ve never forgotten it. Google doesn’t show any results for the phrase. The only place I remember seeing it for sure is in an ad in the Onion’s “Our Dumb Century”. I’m not the only one who’d seen it before, right?
Never heard it in my life. Can’t say I’m surprised, not knowing any Armenians, donkey rapers, or combination thereof.
Shouldn’t that be “Armenian donkey rapist”, anyway?
Don’t play coy with us. You know exactly what it means.
So you’re not permited entry into Armania any longer… big deal! There’s still Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Albania.
So many donkeys… so little time…
I’d like to stay unfamiliar with the phrase AND the practice.
Do they sit on the Group W bench?
I just found a new insult to yell at lousy drivers. Thanks!
Perhaps saying that I don’t know what it means is a bit strong. I have always been under the impression that the phrase referred to a device rather than a person, and I seem to remember that the Onion entry I mentioned above backed me up on that. I’ll have to see if I can find a page number.
My guess would be a really heavy duty shish kebab skewer.
I’m more than a little disturbed that you know even that much.
I believe it was a device advertised in an early 20th century edition of The Onion from the book Our Dumb Century. I don’t have the book with me so I can’t confirm.
[nitpick question]Is this an Armenian who rapes donkeys or just someone who rapes Armenian donkeys?[/nitpick question]
Inquiring minds want to know!
I think it was a whacky farm tool in an old timey parody ad in an Onion book
That’s what I remember too, but I very distinctly remember being familiar with the phrase before I saw that.
I know a few Armenians, but I don’t think I’ll be asking them about this…
I know quite a few Armenians and I’ve never heard of it either. I’m pretty sure my wife would give me the evil Armenian eye if I asked though.
I’m living in the area with the most Armenians outside of Armenia, but alas there are few donkeys here. I suspect relations on this street would get a little frosty if I started asking all my Armenian neighbors …
Seen and raised. I’m madly in love with an Armenian, and, ultrafilter, if you were at either of the last two Gettysdope’s, you’ve met him. In all the time I’ve known him, the issue of donkey raping has never come up. I’m not sure I want to ask him about this one, either!
I’ve seen the “donkey raper” phrase before now. I reckon the bit about Armenia was just to try to add some class. It fails dismally, but hey – someone thought it was obviously worth a shot.
Now that you mention it, I wonder if this phrase is akin the expression “piss like a Russian racehorse.” Or a Chinese one. Or some other random nationality.
Ultrafilter, I carefully asked my Armenian friend about this phrase, explaining that someone I consider a friend and who helped me out once was asking about it. Please try to stop using it. He found it highly offensive and I can see why, I’m afraid.
