Maybe this should be in Humble Opinion, but just wondering who is going to watch, and why.
I am going to watch because, well, I always do. Plus, this year I am looking forward to Chris Rock hosting it…I like him a lot and think he might turn the show into something different.
And even though I sadly have not seen hardly any of the films yet (waiting for DVD for a lot of them) I still want to see who wins…oops…I mean, who “…the Oscar goes to…”.
Yes. In fact, I’m hosting an Oscar party. I don’t always watch, but I made an effort to see a lot of the movies this year. So I’ll at least have a horse in most of the races. I like Chris Rock, but I thought Steve Martin was a very good host.
Haven’t seen the movies, don’t care to, and think the whole thing is too long.
Plus, I have a bad taste in my mouth from Hollywood and the recent election nastiness. So, I will exercise my right to choose and watch something else.
But mainly, I don’t have a dog in the fight this year, so I’m not interested.
I always do, even when I haven’t seen many of the films – and this year I’ve seen several of them.
I love looking at the dresses (though there hasn’t been a good godawful one in a few years – everyone plays it so safe these days), and am looking forward to Chris Rock, who I like a lot.
Sure. I always watch (and I am a heterosexual male who isn’t in showbiz!)
Was Roger Ebert joking when he said that ALL of the nominees would be on stage when they announced the Winner and then ushered offstage when the award was announced?
The combined gross for every film up for best picture is less than $200 million, and no film has cracked the 100 mil mark. Aviator hasn’t made enough money to break even!
Last year I rented Lost in Translation so I wouldn’t have to watch the Oscars, and ended up watching them anyway since LiT was so dull. This year I’m just going to bed early.
I used to always watch, as our newspaper had a contest to pick some of the winners. First prize was a ticket for two to all the theaters in town, for a year. So I watched to see if my picks won. In 1983 I won first place! But the contest has been discontinued.
And in the last few years the show has become so boring. Nobody has done anything controversial, or stupid, or racy. No more streaking the stage, no more refusal of the Oscar, no more sending up someone dressed like and Indian to get it for you. Does anyone recall what happened when Peter Finch won Best Actor (posthumously ) for his role in Network? What the director did was cool. As Finch had died the director was called on to accept the Oscar for him. But he had a sullen expression on his face and told the audience he didn’t know why he had been called on to do this, it should have been Finch’s wife. And he proceeded to call her up out of the audience. I sometimes wonder if the fact she was black, and Finch was white, had anything to do with it. Wouldn’t matter now, but that was some time ago.
So no, I doubt I’ll watch. Haven’t even seen any of the movies.
I thought some people might not care, or find it irrelevant. So I covered it up. Those who were interested, but didn’t know the answer, can read it without having to do a lot of googling.
