Are you scared to fly?

I’m thinking of transferring two kilobucks to my account at Group 3 Aviation (VNY) so I can fling some wings.

If you are afraid you might not want to read this one, but…

A Virgin Atlantic 747 travelling from London Heathrow to New York JFK has been forced to land at a military base in Newfoundland after a warning that a bomb had been planted on board.

No cite yet, but the story is just breaking on BBC News 24.

Separately, Virgin has announced a plan to cut over 1000 jobs in the UK – a sign of things to come in the next few months?

Geez everton, thanks for posting that.

I’m terrified of flying. I hate it. It doesn’t get any easier for me either. These hijackings do kind of add to my fear… but since I was terrified in the first place, that’s not saying much, you know? If I had something to go to in the next couple weeks, I’d like to think I’d fly.

I’m really fatalistic so I’m not scared or worried. But if anything happened then I would be quite scared, bopefully not enough to be incapacitated. This may be because I cannot remember a time where I have not been flying. My first flight was at 1 month and have been flying every few months since then.

So far I’ve reacted very well under pressure saving my father’s life and my own when we nearly had an extremely nasty accident on the freeway. It was wierd, throughout the whole experience when our lives were hanging by a thread I didn’t even think about being scared I just reacted and avoided crashing. Although up there I would have MUCH more time to think about it.

Sorry folks – I s’pose I should’ve expected some reactions like that one.

I’ve often felt lucky that I don’t have a fear of flying, and I don’t have any magic wand method of curing it, but please try not to be scared. The one beneficial effect of the present situation is that extra vigilance among ground crew and airport staff will make flying safer than it’s been in the US for a long time.

This side of the Atlantic we’ve had to get used to a greater level of security at airports than you may expect, and while it might be less convenient to have to wait in longer lines, it’s a price worth paying for peace of mind.

There will be far more false alarms in the near future too – so please don’t worry.

I’m terrifide of flying.
I get panick attacks on board the plane.
Teh best that helps me is to have someone to talk with on the plane,
to get me distracted,
and also to talk about my scarness.
And the terrorist attacks,
have probably done it worse.
Now, I’m flying again soon,
to Vegas on friday,
and I’m so scared of it.

There’s some speculation that airlines will be offering bargain fares to encourage ridership. If they do; I’m up there.

Wicked Blue and Anniz, there are resources on the web to help you overcome your fear of flying.

This site may help, for instance, and I’m sure there must be some Swedish language equivalents.

I tend to take the train where feasible, because flying is a real cattle-car experience nowadays, whereas you can travel in relative comfort (a bed! seats that recline! real food on real plates with metal utensils on a table with a tablecloth!) on most Amtrak routes. But if I had to fly, or was scheduled to fly, I would have no problem with it.

Nope. Yesterday morning I flew from Milwaukee to Green Bay, and I just flew back home late this evening. Life goes on.
