Are you serious? You guys just banned TLDR?

Did someone do the banana thing, or is that a hypothetical random example?

So you would consider blatant threadshitting only things that are completely off-topic, or would “not another thread about Hillary, you people need to get a life” included as well?

See, there we go into that gray interpretation area again!

I’m 100% with you. Short of yelling fire in a crowded theater, which is pretty hard to do online, I don’t see a good reason to ban someone’s speech.

My first recollection of TLDRIDKJKLOLFTW (did I get the order right?) was in one of his earliest trolls, maybe even when he was still a guest, being told by him that I didn’t understand how the Pit works. Probably should have finished his renaming WTF instead of FTW.

He acted like a child. He was constantly told where the line was, and he constantly, blatantly jumped over it. He was given more than enough leeway and chances.

Oh, and from other threads where he wasn’t deliberately posting to incite, such as in CS, I agree with Arnold. His posts all had an edge of “I’m too cool for you if you don’t agree with my tastes”.

Grey, gaddammit, G-R-E-Y.

Ya Merkins spell funny.

:stuck_out_tongue:

The banana thing specifically, no. I was thinking of stuff along the lines of Liberal (who, FTR, I like) dropping into every thread about some dude (Andrew Jackson?) to go, “But he was a dick!”

I don’t think I explained my threadshitting bit well- I meant people who drop into every single thread on a particular subject just to go, “I hate [subject X]”, instead of starting their own Pit thread about subject X.

Another good example would be the people who drop into every Wii thread only to say, “but the PS3 is better!”, or vice versa.

And yes, I’d include “not another thread about (x)”, if that poster did that in every (or lots of) thread about x.

OK, yes, gotcha…that is what I understand to be threadshitting, as well. Just wanted to be sure I understood you.

Ah, but none of these would trouble me in the least, because they are hit and runs, not protracted trollfests.

See, I think just the opposite. If someone like TLDR/VCO3 starts a looney Pit thread, I can look at it, decide I’m not interested, and move on. Easy to ignore, doesn’t affect me in the least. On the other hand, if you are trying to have a conversation about something, and it is deliberately derailed into another topic, that’s much more annoying, IMO. (Of course, threads are hijacked and derailed all the time, and it can be frustrating enough when it’s organic…but we all are guilty of that, and it’s an inevitable result of these kinds of conversations). But when it’s deliberate, I think it really is disruptive and rude.

They are. I will miss him. He was harmless, IMO. He had unpopular and often misguided (I’m being nice), eccentric opinions. He was very entertaining, but I sensed in him a desire to be informed and “corrected”. I think he posted most of the inflammatory stuff to not only get a rise, but also to start conversation about stuff. But his desire to take the piss overcame his desire to be educated/enlightened, so out goes he.

And another one will be along shortly. I do hope he or she is as endearing, but somehow I doubt it. You just can’t get good trolls these days…

This is an example of why it’s hard to find the line–we all have different standards and preferences.

Yup, I was thinking that as I wrote it.

Taggart: Ditto
Hedley Lamarr: “Ditto?” “Ditto,” you provincial putz?

Hedley Lamarr: My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Taggart: God darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore.

Funny how some things remind us of … other things.

[sub]** Just to be clear - I always find Cervaise’ posts entertaining, enlightening, and clarifying; bravo.*[/sub]

You’d think, the internet being open to all the general public out there, that it wouldn’t be so hard. We must have very high standards for trolls.

There have been many times on this board that I’ve thought, “Boy, what a tough call for the mods.” This wasn’t one of them.

It’s really quite simple, folks. This board has one overriding rule: don’t be a jerk.

TLDR wasn’t just a jerk. He reveled in being a jerk. He posted inflammatory threads on purpose, intentionally misrepresenting the facts (the exact opposite of what the board was about) not to ignite intelligent debate, but to get a rise out of people. He was insulting, obnoxious, and didn’t give a damn about the rules. He ignored repeated warnings and gentle–and not-so-gentle–reminders, and even being suspended didn’t wake him up.

Banning him was one of the most clear-cut easy decisions I think the mods could have made here.

This post reeks of jealousy and petulant sour grapes.

First off, you’re equating the right to free speech in public to the right to free speech in a private forum, which is a mistake. Secondly, are you arguing that nobody should ever be banned? Do you have any idea how many socks, trolls and spammers are probably banned on a daily basis to keep our discussions running smoothly?

It totally is. Those fucking bastards are dead to me.

I agree with you, here. I don’t think this is a “free speech” issue, I think it’s more of a “what do we want our message board to be like” issue. Of course, most of us have little say or control in that matter, other than to let TPTB know when we are happy or unhappy. But clearly, they have the right to run the place the way they want to.

How many?

Again, please keep this offboard stuff off this board.

What? Hey, I take that personally! I haven’t said anything quite as idiotic as that in the link since 1986! Why do you all hate me?!!!

Because we do not suffer fools(guinea) gladly.
