I swear I feel like killing someone if only I knew who … I unexpectedly find myself logged out but not at any random time, no, only after I have submitted a long, well composed, post which took me an hour to do. And all I get back is a message saying I am not logged in and now my post is lost forever. Arghhh!!!
I am using win98SE, IE6, cookies and always logged in.
Somebody please do something about this before I kill again!
Might wanna start copying your text before you hit “submit”. Far from the ideal solution, but it works.
And the comedy of it all is that I was logged out right after I submitted this post. It even had my name as the logged in user. Something ain’t right here.
First thing I would try is log off and physically remove the cookies from your client (delete the files.) Then try to log on again.
When composing a long post, it’s always a good idea to copy and paste it to a holding area before pressing submit reply.
No, I am not using a proxy. Yes, I know it is a good idea to copy it somewhere where it is safe. Yes, I often forget to do it and it happens most likely with a long post which took a long time to compose. No, it never happens with short posts about which I wouldn’t care. Yes, I know computers hate me.
Then I would try the other step I mentioned, forcing all your cookies to be recreated. If it continues to happen, it is a client issue and we can’t really do anything about that except suggesting that you try a different client (e.g. a different browser.)
You may consider IE to be broken, but I would suggest that trying to get the enormous percentage of the world that uses it to switch might be taking the wrong approach. Note that the old version of the vBulletin software used to work just fine in this regard. I sincerely hope the vBulletin folks are working on a workaround, because there’s no way in hell I’m switching to Netscape or Opera.
-galt, who was just once again logged out while attempting to post this reply
If Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 doesn’t work for you you could see if the same problem happens with IE 5.5 or IE 5.0. I have never seen the problem with IE 5.0. In any case, if you are really attached to your browser, then I would suggest composing long replies in a different window so that they are saved when you are unexpectedly logged off. I wouldn’t call IE “broken” since many people seem to be using different versions of IE successfully.
vBulletin support says the problem is on the client side, not the server side, with the causes being one of the items mentioned in the sticky thread on the subject in this forum. I wish we had a better answer to give but that’s all I know.
samclem - I could start a conversation with vBulletin support with the words “you are full of shit”, but I don’t think that would be very constructive. I have seen them give this same reponse to several people who have asked the question.
With that being said, I think that for the price the support is pretty good. In my experience their customer care is much better than it is for products from larger software companies that charge a lot more for their wares (I won’t bother naming names.)
You may disagree, but I am more concerned for the people that have to sign on several times a day. Being obligated to sign on twice a month is not a big imposition IMHO.
Well, what about getting a database error page when you press the reply button? That happened to me for about a half hour earlier this evening! I was yelling and cursing at the computer!
Of course, I could go and have a real life too, as sailor said…
The “database error” pops up when there’s too many people trying to access the SDMB. The system can only accept so many connections (though lately we’ve had as many as 500 at one time and that’s pretty amazing), but we do reach the point where demand does overstrip supply and people get timed out.
Don’t know what to tell you, we can’t get the pipeline any bigger, we can’t connect everybody that wants to connect when they want to be connected. All we can say is be patient and keep trying.
yup, I get the database error and plain ol’ timeouts and often find I have been logged out (about once or twice a day). The most amusing part is when, after I post, I open the forum and the thread lists the last post is by “Unregistered”. Huh? that would be me!
It is all most frustrating (or as some would say “fusterating”)
At least if I’m trying to submit a reply and get timed out, I know that it went through! However, if I get the database error page, it won’t go through. I’ve been logged out and everything, as well. It’s definitely frustrating!
I don’t know, I’ve always looked at it as the nature of the beast. It seems kinda like getting upset that there are only 24 hours in the day and we have to work 5 days for every 2 weekend days. As much time as I like to spend in my fantasy world where we get 28 hour days (the four hours being added between midnight and what we now know as 1 AM, so they can be used for only two purposes, to sleep or to procrastinate) and the week is 11 days long (with a 6-day weekend), I still have to learn to live with life the way it actually is. Know what I’m saying? If you wanna post at the best MB on the net, well, sometimes you get timed out and sometimes load times are horrendous. Oh well.
I’ve learned to copy/paste all my posts before I hit ‘submit’ and to double-check before I submit something twice. I’m not perfect (or even really very good at all) at it, and I lose a lot of posts I would like to have made, but I’ve also learned to blame myself for these mishaps, not the board. It is the way it is, and it’s my responsibility to make the most of my own experience here.
Of course, that’s just me, and I could be wrong.
[sub]Sailor – as far as your last post not showing up on the forum page – it’s a common problem. Check here for more information.[/sub]
