Ariel Castro found hanged in cell.

Cleveland 19 News | WOIO | Cleveland, Ohio

Seems he could dish out the imprisonment, but just couldn’t take it. Maybe they should have chained him up a bit more, made it seem more home-like for him. He saved us the money on the trial, and saved the state a fortune on his care and housing…seems like a solid citizen to me. He won’t be missed.

I hope he was actually strung up by someone else, so he could spend his last minutes in terror, begging for his life.

Maybe it wasn’t supposed to be effective, except on paper.

Yep. First kill yourself, and only then turn the gun on other people.

As for people wishing he spent his last moments in terror, or suffering for the rest of his life, what possible good would that accomplish? It won’t help his victims one bit. It wouldn’t teach him anything. He’s a vicious monster. He doesn’t need punishment, because punishment wouldn’t do any good. All we can do is protect ourselves against him. And that means either locking him up where he can’t hurt anyone for the rest of his life, or humanely putting a bullet in his brain.

The humane part isn’t for him, it’s for us normal people who don’t enjoy watching other human beings suffer. If it gives you a boner to imagine a guy getting raped and tortured in jail, and how awesome that would be, then you should probably get some therapy.

I’d love to believe this. I really would.

Ariel Castro’s death does not diminish me one iota. Good fucking riddance.

Meh. As long as his name eventually stops being in the headlines, that will be alright by me. This seems like the natural order of things being restored - about the same as scraping a turd off the bottom of society’s shoe.

Well, he did.

It doesn’t give me (or any of use, I reckon) a boner to imagine “a guy” getting raped and tortured in jail; it gives me (and a few others, I bet) a boner to imagine this guy getting raped and trotted in prison.

Go get yourself some therapy if you can’t see the difference.

I like to imagine that while “rushing” him to the hospital, they stopped for milkshakes.

Knock off the personal insults, please.

Only fitting. The three girls escaped when Castro went out for some McDonald’s.

This song is actually about Fidel Castro, but the first few lines are fitting here. Borderline NSFW.

See, I’m not interested in what this person “deserves”. I don’t give a fuck about him. I’m interested in the rest of us, you know, the normal people. What are we going to do about this guy?

Are we supposed to torture him? Like, have the State Governor appoint a Rapist-in-chief for the prison system who goes around sodomizing the really really bad guys in prison? How much does this position pay? Is there a certification you need to get?

Or are we supposed to let the prisoners handle the sodomy for us? So let me get this straight–we punish rapists by locking other people in prison with them, and giving them free license to rape? You can’t punish rapists by letting other prisoners rape them without rewarding rapists by letting them rape other prisoners. What’s the matter with you that you want to reward rapists by letting them continue to do what they love in prison while the guards look the other way?

It’s not about this person. This person is garbage. Maybe they do deserve rape and torture. But we don’t deserve the right to rape and torture them, or look the other way while rapists and torturers get to enjoy themselves.

Whatever, dude. Thanks for presenting the strawman you made.

Yeah, the idea of celebrating prison rape and torture is a sort of round-robin. One guy put in prison for rape and torture gets to rape and torture another guy put in prison for rape and torture, who gets to rape and torture another guy put in prison for rape and torture.

It makes me think that people don’t think rape and torture are that bad, if they condone it, or celebrate it, under some circumstances.

Back to the topic of the thread: Like Anaamika, I can’t be particularly unhappy if this particular man chose to kill himself. If he was killed, that person needs to be prosecuted.

As he was sentenced to a couple of thousand years or something like that, will they just wall up his cell and leave his corpse in it?

Can’t see letting him go just because he finished the ‘Life Sentence’ thing.

So–is it OK to rape and torture someone, if that person is really really evil? Or not?

I say that rape and torture are wrong, even if someone is really really evil. The thing to do with evil people is to stop them from doing evil, even if that results in pain or discomfort or death for the evil person. But the point is to stop the evil, the pain and suffering of the evil person as we stop them from doing evil is an unwanted side effect. Torturing evil people doesn’t undo the evil they did and it doesn’t prevent future evil, and so it’s pointless and always wrong. If raping Castro somehow magically unraped his victims, then there would be case for raping him. Since it doesn’t, there isn’t.

Keep beating that straw man until he’s dead, pal. I’m sure it’ll die eventually.

ETA: What conclusion should I draw from the fact that you apparently think so little of other people that you would ascribe things to them that are not true in an effort to excoriate them and make yourself look good? Why do you need to continue to argue the morality of attitudes that you falsely, publicly attribute to others?
